Hi All,
I've been looking at moving out of my garage workshop (getting a bit cramped) and getting something bigger, Just really after some ideas, do I rent one, do i build a bigger one - if so do I do it in Metal, Wood, Brick?????
So my question is, what's yours like??? as I'm hoping for some inspiration here guys!! |

Mine's cavity blocks built on top of a concrete slab. It's quite big, 9m X 5m. This is a good size to store 1 car and work on another. Some issues I have with it:
1. the water comes in between the blocks and slab. If I had built it, I would have put the blocks up first, then poured the floor.
2. It has a felt lean-to style roof. I'm positive the felt will start leaking in the near future at which point I'll fit corrugated panels over the top of it.
If you have land, I'd build one with concrete, or steel frame with cladding and a good smooth concrete floor. It's permenant and needs less maintenance. Paint the concrete floor before you put anything into it. If you fill the garage first, you'll never get around to painting the floor!
If you don't have land, a big consideration for me woudl be to have it as close to the house as possible. If it's a bother to get to, you'll not use it as much.
I worked in a fabulous commercial garage in the Winter in the French Alps once. Had a basement for vehicle storage and a heated floor with a huge insulated roller door to keep the warmth in! Indoor car washing too as it would just freeze outside and then you couldn't open the door locks! |

My two garage/workshops are 9M x 6M each, with a steel frame and steel colourbond cladding and a concrete floor laid AFTER they were erected.
There is also a 3.5M x 6M long garage on the side of the house. (Brick walls, tiled roof and concrete floor.)
I'm lucky as I don't have space restrictions to worry about.

We have a good sized double garage with a covered passage way beside it and a large gravel drive. The kitchen is beside the passage, so no shortage of tea. _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1

Glad you like it, If I had known just how much hard work was involved I would never have started the build _________________ ROVER

Brian, that's another very nice building. although I'm very shocked at the quotes you obtained!!
Does anyone know of a steel garage in use ????? that's another possibility.
I have had a look at leasing an industrial unit, around here for 1000sq ft is going to be around 4.5k per annum, plus service charges etc. AND on a 3 year lease.
Personally I'm not keen on renting because of 1. security, 2. travelling to and from, 3. seems dead money!!! |
