--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I attended an auction in a village close to me. The village garage had closed down due to the owners demise!!
Autojumbler professionals from far and wide attended the auction, they were squabling about the lots, bidding each other up,and the auctioneer had to stop at one point to tell them to calm down and get their act together.
I got some good garage equipment though, they tended to go for the car spares and items for a quick sale!!!!
These auctions are getting very thin on the ground now, even if there is an auction the good stuff has been cherry picked by relatives and friends prior to the auction.
How many times have you been to view a car or spare parts owned by an elderly person and fellow enthusiast, only to find the young son-in-law there with quotes of prices attained on Ebay, and quips of "Are you a dealer". Time to walk away I think?
I blame Ebay, television (Loot in your attic), and the media, for putting prices in peoples heads and upping the value of automabilia.
If you attend a Cheffins Vintage auction in Cambridgeshire (twice yearly, and huge, its on the web)you will be amazed to see the prices attained for some of the items.
Saying this I still find my items in the most unlikely places, away from other enthusiasts and competition. Carboots, village fetes, antique fairs(they don`t always know about automobilia) old ladies garden sheds (I Wish) are always a good source.
What was your most unusual find and location?

Interesting post but I'm puzzled as to why you should "blame" anyone for getting the absolute maximum for something they don't want and have put up for sale. I know I would. |

AFTER SEEING THE BEHAVIOUR OF PEOPLE AT AN AUCTION,IT REMINDED ME OF SOME INTERESTING OBSERVATIONS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED ON MY TRAVELS.
NOBODY IS BLAMING ANYONE FOR ASKING A FAIR PRICE FOR SOMETHING,IT IS WHEN THEY INFLATE THE PRICE ON MISGUIDED JUDGEMENT.
DEALERS AT ANTIQUE FAIRS AND AUTOJUMBLES SOMETIMES PLUCK PRICES FROM THE SKY WHEN WEIGHING YOU UP IN FRONT OF THEM,MENTION ITS FOR A JAGUAR AND YOU HAVE NO CHANCE.
SEND A MATE OVER A BIT LATER,WHEN YOU KNOW THE PART FITTED AN ALLEGRO AND THE PRICE HAS DROPPED.
I WENT TO VIEW A HOUSE AND WORKSHOP CLEARANCE LAST WEEK,THE OLD FELLOWS WERE CONVINCED THEIR BROTHER HAD LEFT THEM A FORTUNE IN BYGONES AND COLLECTABLES,THEY WERE MAKING ME LAUGH AT THE VALUATIONS THEY MADE UP.
THE FACT WAS A FRIEND CLEARED OUT ALL THE GOOD STUFF YEARS PREVIOUSLY,THE BROTHER CASHED IN WHILE HE WAS ALIVE.
THE FACT IS SOMETHING IS ONLY WORTH WHAT SOMEONE WILL GIVE YOU FOR IT,IF ITS OVERSOLD IT WILL NOT BE ME!!!
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU BEEN TOLD,"IT WILL BE WORTH £15,000 WHEN RESTORED",YES BUT ONLY AFTER YEARS OF RESTORING AND A GOOD SIZE BANK BALANCE THROWN AT IT.
IF IT WAS THAT EASY THEY WOULD DO IT THEMSELVES!!!! |

My next door neighbour runs a removals business and occasionally when moving elderly people to smaller houses or sheltered accomodation will offer to take away the bits they don't want to keep.
This often results in the whole contents of a garage being brought to my house for me to have first pickings, best of all with no obligation to take anything!
I have acquired some great old tools, some books and maps, and automobilia over the years.
He has yet to discover a real barn find whole car, but we live in hope! _________________ Brian

I have come to the conclusion that there aren't many bargains these days at Auctions. Unrealistic reserves have become the norm. Small items can often be found at small boot sales at cheap prices. _________________ When I exhibit a car I get the Shudders. People queue up to tell me.

| If you and your mate find a jack for a Daimler V8 or a Mk2 Jag in a shed Brian i'll happily make you an offer for it. These are changing hands on ebay for silly money and realistically can't be that rare. One starting price said £50 and "grab yourself a bargain"!!! |

I reckon if you buy anything at auction, then you have paid over the odds .... after all, you have bid higher than anyone else |

I wish I could help you out. They are as rare as rocking horse xxxx.
Beware similar ones used on other makes of car at the same time, they look the same at first glance but are quite different.
I have seen genuine ones fetch £400-£500 at a Jaguar spares day. |
