Reading Poodges thread about burning out old paint tins got me thinking about smells.
I love the smell of the hot asphalt when the roads and pavements are getting repaired and the smell of the hot oil on the traction engines.
Not too keen on burning ferodo. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Freshly ploughed fields, nothing beats freshly ploughed fields and the smell of the suburbs after a shower of rain - the latter not so pleasant but equally evocative.

Freshly cut grass, roast potatoes, a good bordeaux, a bonfire (I always close the window and open the vents to try and keep the smell in the car as long as possible!) Castrol R, fresh tarmac, talc on my daughter when she was newly born, oh, so many things come to mind.

But, as anno domini takes its toll and the sense of smell diminishes, it is still the childish things that have such strong memories like an egg and tomato sandwich for example, but my two favourites I guess are always the newly mown grass and a bonfire.

I can't resist Burgers. No not the smell of Burgers, but the smell of fried onions. I've never plucked up courage to order a fried onions bap yet!

Recently Matthew Parris wrote, in the Times, a very funny article about the smell of creosote. Comparing smells he says "the rank aroma of EP 90 (gear oil), not unlike horse". Now I'm not sure about horses, I never go near them, but I do have a thing about Castrol CL grease.

I first bought a 1lb tin, that's one pound (!) over thirty years ago for a motorcycle. I used only a small amount of this before selling the motorcycle. Open the tin and a quaint smell of rotting apples rushes out reminding me of the first time and the surprise the smell gave me all those years ago.

Some metal working jobs give rise to pleasant smells and new tyres are a joy. After an hour or so the electric motor on my milling machine is wonderful!
