Well, the old girl made it to Brooklands and back, unfortunately in the traffic on the way there it started smoking heavily and I was forced to pull onto the hard shoulder and let it cool down. When we got there I realised it had used 1/2 a sump of oil!
Still, it was a good day, and the highlight for me was seeing her leading the procession of Austin/Morris cars on the embankment In a few months it has gone from Ebay banger to Brooklands star (well, kind of).
On the way back the car was running really well on the M25, until I got near the Dartford Bridge and had to stop in traffic. I then noticed the steam erupting out of the radiator grille. So, a quick detour for water via a Dartford petrol station and we were back on the road again.
I carefully checked all the hoses for leaks, and the radiator, nothing there. What I did notice was that the water appeared to have been forced out of the radiator cap, which on inspection was found to have a very perished rubber seal. I got a replacement from my local spares shop, and touch wood, haven't had any problems with it since. Although I'd like to fit a temperature guage before I take it on the motorway again!
Since the Brooklands trip the car has started smoking on startup and also puffing blue smoke on every gearchange. It is also using a lot of oil. I did a compression test the other day and the compressions were slightly down: 100,90,100,90. I'm hoping we can get away with a top-end overhaul, as I don't really want to scrap the original engine.
We also changed the leaking rear hub seals, but now the front wheel cylinders have started leaking and my new brake shoes on one side have been ruined . I'm going to buy new wheel cylinders from the Owners Club, just got to try to make up a set of four that have all the adjuster teeth for exchange!
Other news: Fitted a period AA badge to the new grille

I should have done, but we all just wanted to get home, it was getting dark and I don't know your address anyway. Even if I did I'd probably get lost trying to find it (no SatNav in an A35) _________________ Richard Hughes |

No SatNav, but you've got a cat fitted I see.
I thought I'd given you my address? I'll PM it again for the next time you are passing. _________________ Keef - Sheerness Kent UK

Sounds good Rick, as I had no passenger to hold the camera I sellotaped it to the rear view mirror - not very professional but it does the trick!
Here are the action shots

Great one Richard
We'll have to have a run together when I'm back on the road.
Video camera in each car.
Hope to be ready for the last Thursday of this month. |

It came out really well, I'll have to give that idea a try

Thanks Rick, one tip though, don't stick the sellotape onto the reflective part of the mirror as it takes the reflective surface off! I'd only just fitted a NOS mirror glass as well _________________ Richard Hughes |
