Just wondered if any other caravan "nuts" were going to the GDSF. We tried to get into the caravan section but got turned down ( boooo Hisssss) So we entered one of our collections to display in the collections section. Will be there with our Car Crusier Clubman. Even though its restoration is not totally complete. So if any one wants to pop over for a cuppa and a chat you very welcome. I hope some of you will be in the vintage caravan section and we will be there to look around and have a chinwag with anyone . We will be there from Saturday 28th to set up our exhibit and hopefully catch a few bits and bobs in the auto-jumble and traders stalls.

Never been and this year it looks like I will not have my setup quite ready. I have had an look at the website, looks impressive show. So as an vintage caravan and car exhibit, what could I expect. Are exhibitors able to buy evening concert tickets each day and so on?

It's quite hard getting in as an exhibitor. Unless anyone on here can offer tips.
I got the RM Club invited as "guest Club" back in 2001; never seen anything like it in my life. If you go there and are bored you might as well shoot yourself. Something for everyone doesn't come close.
I was there for 6 days and didn't see it all. I'd love to go back but invitations are rare as hen's teeth. Come on, how can I get in as an exhibitor?

We have been to Dorset Steam Fair. Very Happy

The secret is not to have an exhibit that you are tied down to all day long. Idea

The Vintage Caravan section states that someone has to be with the exhibit all day, many other types of displays obviously need to be kept an eye on at all times. Sad

If you want to view the event properly you need a static exhibit that can be locked up and left,i.e. Vintage Lorry,Vintage Car, Motorbike.

What is the point of standing outside and patrolling your exhibit for 6 days,(unless it is a working item),and not getting around the show.

Ok,you go round in the morning, the wife in the afternoon, that`s fine if your not getting along with each other, but you want to expierience the event together surely.

The organisers know that people have taken the p**s in the past, and are clamping down on non bona fide exhibits.

If you have got something vintage, well restored and different, you have a good chance of getting in.

The evening time at Dorset is something quite special. Exclamation Exclamation

Well Gresham, we usually take turns in looking after the exhibit and that gives us all the time we need to look around. Then after 5pm when the public go, we can both get off together and have the site to ourselves and the other exhibitors. We usually manage to find a beer tent or two as well.

I've "done" the GDSF for the last 3 years, and it's been fantastic: It's a massive site and there's so much to see and do (especially if you like a bit of steam as I do!)

Here's a few shots of 2007 and 2008 for your browsing pleasure - I must get round to uploading my '09 pics at some point!

However, this year, I've decided to have a change (and save some money). No GDSF for me this year Sad

Now here's the bit where I'm treading on eggshells, as I hope I don't offend any of the Right Honourable Members of this forum... believe me, it's not my intention rub anyone up the wrong way, but...

There are some beautiful vehicles on display from tractors and commercials to motor-cars and THE most gorgeous vintage motorbikes. People (like your good selves) obviously spend an absolute fortune and many hours of time getting their vehicles pristine. For this, I salute and thank you!

Then these amazing vintage/classic vehicles are driven round by people in jeans, Nike trainers and a FCUK T-Shirt.

Don't get me wrong, I understand it's all about the vehicle... but after spending £1000s (sometimes £10,000s!) on a gorgeous vintage motor, why doesn't anyone spend a few quid getting matching period clothing?

From my perspective as a "punter", that would not only look fantastic but help me place the vehicle in a historical context and really bring it to life.

Interesting comments Doctor, as an exhibitor of vintage car/caravan I agree with your sentiment regarding period clothes when exhibiting. For myself I do when the occasion calls for it, that is re-enactment days. For the vast majority of shows it simply doesn't work dressing in period. Probably find yourself the odd one out with possible embarrassment resulting. So in short I say if they do I will Smile

I love dressing up in and out of the bedroom. Exclamation Exclamation

Joking apart, why not dress the part whatever you are driving or exhibiting at an event or show.it adds to the theatrical splendour.

As part of the collecting bug we always rummage around charity shops, vintage cloths stalls etc looking for period clothing.

Whatever I am driving I like to dress the part, people love it. Very Happy

Re enactment events like the Goodwood Revival,1940`s events,Steam Rallies etc are ideal places to be a character for a couple of days.

At steam rallies wear collarless shirts, waistcoats, highwaist trousers, boots and a bowler, rub some smut in your face and hit the Steam Up Bar. Cool

At 1940`s events in the day time, blazer or sports jacket, shirt, cravat, corduroy trousers and brogues,in the evening at the dance suit up or look like Uncle Tom.
Very Happy

Goodwood Revival dress to impress, who can not admire the ladies and gents strolling around,or a young filly in a mini.

Classic Cars,Vintage Caravans or Vintage Motorcycles is a bit of escapism or a way of life for some folk, mind you some folk do not have to dress up,they live and look like that all the time. Exclamation Exclamation

This weekend we are off to a 1940`s event, from Friday afternoon to Sunday night we will get into a past decade which was a lot more stylist than what you see strutting around the local High St on a Saturday morning, Wayne and Wynetta, thats for sure.

Now were is my Douglas Bader uniform ..........

I recall an couple of years back being suited up in my 1930's garb, on route to the show I realised that I needed to pop into the local supermarket. Wandering up and down those isles certainly drew some looks Laughing Weekend after next sees an repeat performance for an event in Norfolk, must remember to get all my shopping done prior to weekend.

I don't suppose anyone remembers the NEC Classic Car Show the year that the Riley RM Club put on a Hallowe'en theme?
We were all spooks and ghoulies. I was dead; dressed in my demob suit and white-faced, draped in cobwebs etc etc; someone even made me a tombstone to carry round with me.
The thought occurred to me that on the drive back home to Manchester, had I been involved in some minor traffic accident it would have been straight off to the mortuary for me despite my protestations.
