Does anyone know about Pinto EFI engines and in particular the ECU module? Confused Pat's has a 3.0ltr Taurus/Sable module in it. Could this be OK?
Thanks Nic

I can check with our garage mechanics in the morning, but my first reaction is no. My understanding is that the ECM has to be for the exact same make/model/spec.
Exactly what do you have? A 2litre Pinto with a 3litre Sable ECM? (Why? !!) Does it 'work'? or are there specific problems? There may be a workaround.

I've parsed it over to a Ford biased classic forum.

Essexclassics

Someone might be able to help.

If the motor runs okay and your happy with performance and economy I wouldnt worry, it might have been reprogrammed.

It hardly runs under 2000 rpm. I have checked most of the sensors but cannot find the Engine position/rpm sensor. It sounds awesome when it is revved.

I had a long chat with Andrew at The ECU Doctor and his opinion is that a V6 ECU cannot be reprogrammed to run a 4 cylinder engine. I managed to find out the part number for a Pinto EFI ECU and found one on Ebay today. So I will keep you informed.

Nic
It will be interesting to see the outcome of this. In the process you're raising the issue that future generations of preservationists will have to learn new (non-traditional?) skills for - ie computers.
I'm pretty convinced that many parts on 'modern' cars, especially electrical parts, are deliberately designed to fail after a certain period of time or distance. We have 6 2006/7/8 Mercury Grand Marqius' with a computer-controlled heating & A/C system (set the temperature & forget it). Every single one has failed. If I, as a private owner, had one of these, I'd be pretty annoyed to have to spend $600 on a new control unit after only 2 or 3 years & out of warranty. These cars all have 200,000+ miles, but what does the heating system have to do with mileage?
Some electronically equipped cars are already approaching 'classic' status. Time to start learning, methinks.

I think I have narrowed it down to the TFI unit (Thick Film Ignition), or is that setting fire to a DVD of Dumb and Dumber? This is the unit that "fires" the coil, oh well it's only money.

I cleaned the backplate of the TFI module, replaced the heatsink compound, checked the earthing and clamped it to an earthed bit of chassis. It is now firing on all 4 pots again but still too rough to take for a blast.
EDIT - I think I will have a look for an air leak. The Idle Speed Valve seems to be wide open, umm.

Big step forward. I took the injectors out and found that when the engine was put in the car the fuel line was not cleaned out. Rolling Eyes . Water must have got into the fuel rail and there was allsorts of cr&p in the injectors. I have blown them through and the car runs a lot better with the timing at 6deg BTDC not 25deg BTDC Shocked . The idle bypass valve has been replaced but it is not openning when the engine is switched off - the ECU should do this. We love a challenge.
