So what was the first car you ever owned?
Mine was a Volvo Amazon 122s of 1965 vintage.
I paid £50 for it in 1977 and then had to get my dad to weld it up for the MOT. _________________

My first was 1962 Mini Traveller, red & rust. I paid £62 for it and sold it for a tenner after it failed the MoT when the rust overtook the red.... a few weeks later I heard a familiar sound (it had a Peco exhaust) and looked out of the window where I worked in Bath - it rocketed past, good as new (it would have been about 13 years old at the time).

Hillman Superminx which cost me a fiver when I was 16.
Second car was very expensive at £20 for a Viva HA and I almost had to take out a bank loan to pay for my third car which cost £115, Viva HB
Insurance when I was 17 for TPF&T was £51 The good old days right enough _________________ ROVER

In 1959 My 1st. car was a 1933 MG K1 Magnette (only 128 made) which cost me £7 10/- (that's £7.50 in modern money). It had a 6 cylinder OHC 1087cc engine with an ENV preselect gearbox. The camshaft was driven vertically thru' the dynamo driven by bevel gears. The upper gear had a lot of play in it and about a 1/4 turn after the crank was turned the camshaft would start to move. I couldn't get part and eventually gave up when I was offered a 1948 Jaguar 2 1/2 litre saloon that actually ran. It only got 13 MPG when I got it and even at 23p a gallon it was a struggle to feed on apprentice's wages. Fixing a leaking reserve valve and stuck SU carb pistons got it up into the mid 20s.

Picture of a very young yours truly piloting his first vehicle home behind a Fergie tractor. Sorry, not a car, but a Ford TT one ton truck of 1918. Photo taken in 1959

In 1986 i bought a 1972 VW Beetle, 1302S model, it cost me £125 and i spent 3 months with my dad welding it back together even though it was only 14 years old at that point. It passed it's MOT the day before i passed my driving test . 2 days later i rolled it on pig slurrey that had spilled over from a farm and it was beyond saving..then bought a MKII Escort..hand painted in beige house hold paint..it cost me £50 and sailed through it's MOT just needing a bulb. _________________ Rust Junky & oil addict. |

The Spit was my first car proper. Dad bought it in 1985 for £25 as a wreck. He did a few odd jobs to it - such as chopping out both floors and sills - then passed it to me a couple of years later to get on with.
It finally hit the road in 1989, by which time I'd been running the Mk1 A40 for a couple of years or so. So the A40 was my first roadworthy car, but the Spit the first car.
The A40 was bought new by my Great Uncle and Aunt who lived in Exmouth. A 1960 car, they kept it from new and passed it to mum in the 1980s. She didn't much like it so it ended up coming my way, probably in 1987 as I took my test in it later that year. I still own it, but it needs a lot of tlc now

My first car was a 1933 Standard Big 9, bought for £35 off my uncle. He showed me how to change gear and I drove it home unaccompanied.
It was the time of the Suez crisis in 1957. I was 19 years old. _________________ Due to the onset of my mid eighties I'm no longer sprightly and rarely seen in my Austin special. I have written a book though. https://amzn.eu/d/7rwRRqL |

Can you remember if the chassis had a cruciform.
My chassis looks like a Standard 9 in a photo I found on line, could only see the front of the chassis around the engine bay,
But I have been told Standard 9's didn't have cruciform, yet a Standard 10 dose, as seen at Colchester a couple of weeks ago
Trying to get any info from the Standard club
And the same goes for any Standard owner I have met so far. |

Fiftyseven years ago? All I can remember is the dipstick had a cork on the end that floated in the sump. It broke off and I had to empty to sump and measure the oil every so often to see if there was enough.
If I had been smart enough to remove the stop so that the dipstick could be removed to read it it would have saved me a lot of trouble and prevented the guy I sold it to from running the ends. _________________ Due to the onset of my mid eighties I'm no longer sprightly and rarely seen in my Austin special. I don't know if this counts but the nice thing about it was that I could run it aged 16 on my motorcycle licence.
