They definitely had a straight 6 too. It was called a 6-71 I think.
I worked for Avis truck rentals and we had a load (about 40) Ford Louisville single axle tractors leased to Sears. The blower was mounted on the side of the block. I can't find one in a truck but this shows the blower just below the exhaust.

To change the subject slightly I ran a Guy Big J single drive six wheel tipper with a non turbo'ed Cummins V6 on my own account in 1973-4. Nice roomy cab compared to the inline engined J's but rather thirsty and little low speed torque. Bet JUJ 711E has long been recycled!
