thanks for the comments,
im not a carpenter or joiner in fact never had any training or experience in woodworking, but i've got two hands and a few tools and are just having a go and learning whilst doing so to speak,
hi cobber,
your van sound intresting any chance of some pics.... im screwing the plywood panels in place with brass screws as this is how the original ones were, one good job the mouldings cover any screws so none are showing.

Well, seeing as most of the shows this year have been cancelled due to our lovely british weather!!!! ive been pressing on with the van,
A new canvas roof has been fitted and has had numerous coats of paint, new mouldings facia boards and gutters have all been fitted,
The roof is now watertight and the sides have been undercoated ready for top coats,
looking forward now to seeing the exterior coming together, |

Great to see your doing such fine work on the Cheltenham Rob. Look forward seeing her at some rallies next year maybe.
Really enjoyed the National last week, lots of lovely people and had a jolly time. See you in October. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! ( Oscar Wilde)

G'day Rob,
Can you give us some information on how you went about sticking the canvas on the roof... Did you use calico ? It's a pretty messy operation I believe but it look like you have done a good job of it
Cobber. |

| Yes, I would also like a run down on how to recanvas the roof. My van is from 49 and canvas roofs were how the firm did their buses then. It´s plywood under. |

hi all, well agreed re-canvasing a roof is a big job and also a very tricky one especially if you want to do it in one piece...
personally i cut the canvas ( callico ) to fit each side of the lantern roof pinned it along the gutterline and fitted the gutters to hold the canvas tight ... i then stretched the canvas up to the lantern roof upstand and fix a length of quadrant hardwood molding along the edge to keep the canvas tight then stretching the canvas up the lantern roof to the top of the roof and pinned along the top of the roof line.. i reapeated this action on the otherside than stretched canvas to the top of the lantern roof pinning each side then fixing wooden angled molding to the very top edge of the lantern, then coated the entire roof with three coats of gloss white paint
tadaar! completed canvas roof
obviuosly a van with out a lantern roof is a little more difficult as you have to take any curves into account, but i guess the same system applies.
hope this helps any more info p.m me |

The whole thing, let alone the roof, looks great to me.
It's a credit to your workmanship and I wish I could see it up close?
I'm looking forward to more photo's of the project. How long has it taken so far to get this far? _________________

well fluffle-valve,
i started the restoration in january 2011... but its been stop start all the while with not touching the van for around 8 months due to work comitments and also the arrival of a 33 winchester so its hard to say i thought at the begining it would be a year long project but i keep telling my self tht theres no rush and it will get done eventually!
i hope!!!!!!!!!!! |
