I've had this photo for a while, no information comes with it. There are no Air Ministry (or similar) stamps on the reverse.
Are they bombed aircraft at an airfield, or is this a dump for retired aircraft? Can anyone id anything from this photo?
There are plenty of wheeltracks in the soft ground, and the terrain - to the left of shot at least - seems to be undulating.

Dad's thoughts:
"Right, the one in the lower foreground is a JU52 German transport (minus wing engines), top right of pic is a JU88 (German equivalent of our Mosquito, minus engines), top left is an Italian Siai Marchetti (S46 I think) a 3 Alfa Romeo radial engined device, not sure about the others, the one to the left with no tail could be a Messchmitt 110 twin engined night fighter.
Interesting photo that, I would say that it is a scrapping area on an airfield somewhere in the Italian mainland, Siai Marchettis did not often venture into northern Europe (although occasionally they did)." _________________ Rick - Admin

I could speculate a little maybe: I'm thinking that these are not in a 'dump for retired aircraft' per se as these machines would be front line technology when the picture was taken. It may be that they have become damaged due to in-flight battle damage, take-off or landing accidents and are awaiting spares/repairs, maybe they are a source of spares? If taken towards the end of the war then spares shortages would be probable.
My guess is that these machines, not being airworthy, have been positioned in a more remote part of an airfield in an attempt to draw attacks away from serviceable/operational aircraft, hangars and personnel. Again maybe you could say that their efforts have payed off?
It's only a guess at best and I'm probably wide of the mark, but it is a possible scenario...... There's a series of youtube clips concerning a Thunderbolt squadron based in Corsica and fighting in Italy, it's worth watching in my opinion and certainly gives you the idea of what war was like in the air in that region towards the end of the conflict:

The aircraft in right foreground is a Heinkel 111,the rest i agree with you, except to say the JU88 was too slow to be the equivalent to our mossie the JU188 or the 388J-1 which had a top speed of 363mph yes,i did some work on the 111 Spanish copy the Casa, which supposedly flew in the Battle of Britain film and i did have R/R merlins in it. |
