Anyone know what size gas mantles are used in a 60s Cheltenham caravan. Never had anything to do with mantles before, i know you can buy ones from camping shops etc

Usually No. 1 or Bijou size (two names for same size).

Just curious:
How does the #1 or Bijou differ from the Coleman #11, 20 or 21 mantles?
I've heard the Coleman's are too big for (some/most/all) caravans but are a fraction of the cost. Is it possible to cut them down & re-thread them?

The No. 1/Bijou, No. 2, and No. 3 standard British mantles are bayonet fixing with a three-point gravity-assisted anchorage (actually, I'm not sure about the No. 3 - expert needed).
You could/can buy ceramic adaptors that thread onto the US style appliances and allow you to use British style mantles, but it is all getting a bit archaic and truth be told you find it hard to buy any of this stuff nowadays.
I have a few new-old-stock No. 2 mantles available collection only.

If you want to keep your mantles for more than one trip, without them shaking off, go to here

http://www.base-camp.co.uk/Wicks.htm

and order a few mantle springs, these fit the burners and press onto the mantle rings, stopping them from flipping off the burner as the caravan travels along. Only 50p each and well worth it. I ordered enouch for our three, works a treat, before had loads of mantles falling off and breaking.
Mainly fits no2 but if a thin washer was fitted on top, with a smaller hole they would fit no1 as well.

I remember reading in an old caravan magazine from one reader who wrote in saying they use to spray ladies hair lacquer onto the mantles to stop them breaking. Never tried it myself mind, don't have any ladies or hair lacquer!
