Whilst searching for information on the Alvis Salamander Fire Truck I came
across your web site with the Alvis Stalwart and wondered if you might be
able to help.
I'm an ex RAF Fireman (1971 - 1993) and one of a team of volunteers at the
Museum of RAF Firefighting at RAF Scampton.
The main part of the collection are the vehicles which now amounts to over
40 (1942 through to 1999), some found recently in farmers fields to those
fully restored and running. One of the vehicles in the collection is a MK6
Crash Fire Truck circa late 1950's and her registration number is 23 AG
56. She would be one of the first from the Alvis Factory, from the Saladin
and Stalwart family, named the Salamander. Some years ago she had a
partial restoration, apparently after standing in a field for 30 years it
took just a day to get the engine running.
As I'm sure you are aware, the transmission in particular is very complex
and subject to many breakdowns due to the bevel box "wind up" . Ours seems
to be in tact at the moment but were lacking any technical data, servicing
manuals etc; this has resulted in us "leaving her alone" for the time
being. A real shame, as her engine runs as sweet as a nut but moving her
sounds painful at times with lots of squeaks, clunks! She doesn't go
anywhere quickly, just as well as only the ratchet handbrake works!
I'm keen to get my fellow volunteers motivated to tackle the old girl, if
by any chance you have any servicing information or old technical documents
or know of any expertise on these vehicles or can point me in the right
direction I would be very pleased to hear from you.
Many thanks
David Jenner
