............can anyone help to prove that I'm not?
In 1961/2 I went to the Scottish motor show in Kelvin Hall, Glasgow. It was the year that Ford brought out the Consul Classic, and there was one of these cars running around the city with red illuminated tyres. Sadly, the two pals I was with are both dead, so I've no-one now to back me up.
Please someone tell me I didn't dream it!
I also wonder why it never caught on, or was it just a publicity stunt?

Peter,

I was involved in the setting up of this car at the Kelvin Hall show. I worked as an auto-electrician at Croft Coachbuilders who were the main Ford dealer for Glasgow and it was on our stand that the car was displayed. The practicalities of powering the lamps/tyres was they were mains powered so a very long extension cable would be required Smile As I recall the tyres were made by Firestone and were red.

Art,

What do you know about the girl? She appears to have some electrical connection to her suspenders? Do her legs light up too?

47jag, I saw the car being driven on the road. How was that possible if the lights were mains powered?

Emmerson,

Did you actually see the car on the road, or a picture of it? We had it wired up to a plug on the turntable. Although in the picture there's a cable going to the hubcap. Maybe a 'phase two developement Laughing 'I have a vague recollection of a flat tyre or a discussion about what would happen if it had one. Confused It was 50 years ago Rolling Eyes

Hi
If you watch any of the police chase progs you will see cars being driven regularly with their tyres lit up after they have been over the stingers. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I thought she was rubbing her nylon clad legs together to create enough static electricity Very Happy

It's a shame my Welsh mate was proved correct - some may now start believing more of his stories!! Sad

I told you my memory was flaky. Confused I did a search and there were a couple of hits both showing the same picture and they were in fact made by Goodyear not Firestone as I said.

Seeing as she's probably in her seventies by now you're more than welcome to her legs. Shocked

Art, no I definately saw it on the road, approaching Kelvin Hall. It did look very wierd, but you couldn't miss it.I wonder if they powered the tyres with a generator? Funnily enough, I don't remember seeing it in the show!
Agreed, it was fifty years ago, but I seem to remember things then better than I can remember yesterday! Now, just who is this BrianM? Laughing

It also looks like there's a fluorescent ring on the hub cap so that could be 12volt with a slip ring connection to allow it to be driven with the fluorescent light shining on the tyres. The cable looks like an extend/retract type(like a truck suzy) so that would take care of the wheel revolving. Just a thought, cheers,JD.
