Hi all. It turns out I'll be visiting your fair island in a week. I won't have too much time as I'll be on business, but what would you recommend I see in/around Swindon? I'll have to stop at Stone Henge of course, but what else would you recommend?

Hi
I did some work in Swindon a couple of years ago; the town its self is a bit dire , however English Heritage's Archive is there, I think its called the Record or Monument Centre, and there is a steam museum.
Both of these are on the site of the old Railway Works and worth a visit.

Steam museum is very good and worth visiting. Even better is the car museum at Bourton-on-theWater.

Hi
If you go to Avebury then you are also near the http://atwellwilson.org.uk/ motor museum. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

I watched a programme the other night on BBC4 about the A303 which goes past Stonehenge. That looks an interesting run. Or you could come over "the wall" and tour the Trossachs.....beautiful _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

I'll likely be without my own vehicle during the trip. Depending on which of my coworkers has a car I may have some freedom. We may take a train to Bath as well. I'll try to check out the steam and motor museums. We'll see what time we end up having left over.

If you have limited time & no car, check out the Big Bus Company or Guide Friday for one-day bus/train tours from London for not a lot of money.
Probably the best is London-Salisbury-Stonehenge-Bath-London with time at each stop & a pub lunch somewhere along the way.
There's a similar one to Oxford, Stratford-On-Avon & Cotswold country.
& others.
By train, the Great Western Society at Didcot is literally next to the station, STEAM Museum at Swindon is a short walk.

Made Oxford as part of a walkabout for the conference. Going to try and squeeze in the train museum, aveburry, and stonehenge tomorrow. We'll see how that works out. If possible, Bath on Saturday with a late trip back to London. Maybe just back to London.
