My mate went to tax his 67 Gazelle after it passed its MOT but couldnt tax it because the V5 had PLG as the taxation class. He phoned the DVLA to see if they would send him a new v5 with Heritage as the taxation class and they told him he would have to get the build date as proof. Where could he get that from??? He is going to the main DVLA office today in Glasgow so I will let you know how he gets on. He could have taxed it but would have had to fork out £220. I have never heard of that before Confused Confused

That does seem a little picky to me. You could understand it if he was trying to change the class on a car that was registered in early 1973, he would have to prove it was actually built in 1972 to get the free tax. But for something registered so far before the cut-off date, it seems silly to have to prove it.

Hopefully he will get a Human, not a jobs worth at DVLA, at his local tax office.

I had details changed on my V5 at Chelmsford office, it was classified as a
4 wheel tractor ?? and also it was registered as a Ford DLM Special on the V5,
the original 'book' had it as a DLM 1 so were they got ford dlm special from is anyones guess.

No questions asked apart from do I need anything else changed.
Walked out with my tax disc and was able to use the car that afternoon.

Hope you get things sorted.

Just remembered had the colour changed as well.

is there and/or is he a member of an owners club for the Gazelle?

the Alvis owner club sorted the build date for my Alvis as regards the DVLA and taxation class.

not much help but it maybe worth checking / asking

I havent heard from him today but I advised him to phone Gordon Bissett in Dumfries who is the Secretary of the Scottish Rootes Enthusiats and organiser of the Moffat Rally to join their club. As yet he hasnt done so.

Hi
What does the V5 have as date of first registration?

If it is 72 or earlier it's build date cannot possibly be 73 or later. Confused

The V5 has it as March 1967 but he went to the DVLA in Glasgow and got it taxed no bother. No questions asked......sorted. Cool

This demonstrates the difference between the authority a local DVLA (LVRO) office has , and the Post Office who can only be guided by the recorded taxation class.

Its topical given the other current thread regarding the closure of local DVLA offices, I wonder if Post Offices will have any more authority once the local DVLA offices close?
