My E83W builders "Truckette"
This is my E83W builders pick up, it was in the shed next door to the E88W that I bought in March 2012 which is featured in this forum. I just had to have this one as well.
The original owner who was a builder bought it brand new in October 1957 and is still as bright as a button at 78 years old, he built houses, factories and schools using this little truck. It only has 28,000 miles on the clock and I am assured by him it is correct, due to the building work being concentrated locally in the Washington (Co. Durham, UK) area
This is the original sign written door which I aim to recreate when the truck is finished in its original livery which was Ford Imperial Maroon with black wings. I have that on good authority... the original owner

Rick, I wish there was but the door needs a lot of work. I hope to get someone who can do it in gold leaf like the original but I know what you mean, it isn't going to look as good when it's bright and shiny new.

Hi
I even have a spare door that is painted up, should I ever get round to finishing it, it will be swap-able, so the original writing we found is there for ever.
Could you do this?
With today's modern bodywork techniques, if you do paint over it there will be no way to get it back I wouldn't think, even if you do replicate it, like you say it will be new etc. I know of a good sign writer, though it is probably a bit far to you.
Ace truck by the way! Always nice to See E83W's! I am Surprised Rick hasn't had another yet...
Cheers

Now that did cross my mind, I have a pair of doors which I could use and keep the originals. They are easy enough to swap, I think that is a plan! Thanks for the inspiration.
Yes, I think Rick could be tempted, it was his Web pages I came across when searching the internet after I bought my first one (A Van which I still have) a good few years ago. I was amazed by his passion for them. I have a few now and can't bring myself to sell any of them. I definitely have the E83W bug!
By the way Dave, I bought a load of E83W spares off you a few years ago, can you remember? They are still in the crate (well the ones I haven't used are) and have been a great source of parts for my projects past present and future thanks.

Plus if you repaint your existing doors, the signwriting can only be recreated using drawings and measurements. If you have the original doors alongside the new, you'll probably end up with a much better match, and still have the originals to display with it Best of both worlds.
I did that with my truck, although in my case the originals were way too ropey to re-use in any way, but I kept them for display.

Hi
Ah yes, I did wonder if it was you, with your location as it was, glad they have helped. I have collected a few more since, but no where near as many, so they are handy to have. One day my E83W will be the coal supplying vehicle for a certain roller, it is all planned in my head, just got to do all the work... plenty of time.
Cheers

I assume you'll then need a driver for NCA 129

The little truck was buried under a pile of parts and random objects, I couldn't get near it until it was moved. This is halfway through.

Looks to be an interesting truck, in an interesting shed.... You offered to clear the shed too? |

Whilst I admire your attitudes to keeping things original, don't you think that putting replacement doors on simply to retain the signwriting where? in a museum? is going a bit far.
From my experience of very old cars, the final fettling and leadwork done in the factory can make the fit of each door very personal to that vehicle.
Why not make a template of the writing, take photos and do what the builder would eventually have had to do, and get it redone. |

I go with Rick on this one. The truck is just another example of this particular model, however, the history of the vehicle is well documented by way of the original owner.
Restore it to its former glory complete with tools etc of the trade, write up the history, with images of where it spent its working days and exhibit it all together, including the doors. It becomes a piece of motoring and social history.
If the owner still has business documents etc, then you have a "one off" exhibit that will interest many people. |

Not at all, if anything things are going in the direction of preservation of original material and fittings wherever possible.
Ok it's a compromise fitting doors that weren't put on the truck when new, but preserving the originals with their time-worn signwriting to display with the finished truck would make for an interesting display IMHO.
The fit of the doors on an E83W was never particularly brilliant so I doubt there'd be the need for any leading or master coachbuilding to make a different set of doors fit, but yes on something with a more coachbuilt body then maybe such fettling would be needed.
