Bit of a sad Christmas for me as it'll be the first with no Mum or Dad to visit. I hate the commercialism of Christmas, I'd be more than happy if it didn't start on TV and in supermarkets until December 1st - as is the rule in some countries I believe - seeing Santa related tat in shops in October is a bit much.

Coincidentally, we were wondering this morning where the practice of hanging a wreath on your front door at Christmas originated. Does anyone know?

I am with Riley541 on this one...Too early...too commercialised...and Xmas instead of Christmas is all wrong...not that I am a bible thumper but over the years I have noticed a decline in numbers at our midnight church servive on Christmas Eve. The whole meaning of Christmas is being eroded away. In fact some people take out loans and pay it back over a year.....Crazy but that seems to be the norm. now to spend hundreds of pounds on your children at Christmas.
Next week it will be adverts for kitchens and furniture on the TV.

I'm a bah humbug.

Totally agree its far to commercialised. It winds me up that the likes of the super markets start ramming it into us so early that when it does come round I'm sick to the back teeth with it. Can't come and quick enough for me.

Don't worry in a couple of weeks time the shelves will be full of Easter Eggs.
The local supermarket has already had deliveries of them a fortnight ago.

I am all for celebrating Christmas but also in the 'over commercialised' corner.

What also tickles me are Atheist celebrating the birth of Christ yet all year round telling people how they don't believe in religion. Rolling Eyes

I'm with Riley541 also. My mother died suddenly 32 years ago on Christmas morning, while getting ready for the kirk. It's still a sad time with many other friends popping off during the so called festive season - just seems worse at this time of the year. I'm afraid I tend towards the humbug end - glad when it's over. Seasons greetings to all(I know ,it's a habit)Cheers,JD.

I'm not an Atheist but an agnostic and untill some omnipotent being puts its self before me, that's the way I will remain, I don't celebrate the birth of someone who can not be proven to have existed but use this forced holiday to get together with friends and relatives and use it to have a good booze Embarassed , I mean good time Laughing Wink

We went to our 4.5yr old's first primary school nativity the other evening, that was jolly good, things like that make this time special still - so long as I avoid the sales, and endless adverts on TV for tat, I should come out the other side relatively un-scathed.

The year my daughter was born we bought " A Muppet Christmas Carol" a newish take of the Dickens classic, we watched it last night and as we have done every year it gets me into the Christmas spirit Very Happy yes there is a lot of commercial stuff at Christmas, but at least its keeping someone employed! Smile

I think the xmas date is Pagan related (shortest day ?) so whatever your view, at least now we can begin to look forward to longer days Very Happy
