|
|
Whist picking up some components in Maplin yesterday, I spotted THIS film & slide scanner, on offer at £14.99. If like me you have loads of stuff on 35mm, I thought I'd give it a go, and I think its ok
It comes with some colour/ red eye/ etc correcting software and is simple and quick to use. Feels a bit cheap for the £60 non sale asking price! but at £14.99 one can't complain.
Scanned this negative, taken about 18 years ago at Oulton Park.

| I use a Veho scanner, much the same as the Maplin one. Really happy with the results. I use a photo editor to bring back the colour. |

Hi
Another way to do slides.
If you have digital SLR use a slide copier such as used to be fitted instead of the lens on an SLR when copying slides or getting a negative film from slides. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Hi Dave,
Approximately how long does it take to scan one frame?
Does it autofocus on a glass mounted slide?
Thanks,

| At that price I wouldn't argue. I bought a sophisticated scanner about 10 years ago and did my whole collection of slides and negatives. The difference with yours is the size of the scan at 5 megapixels it's not huge. Nothing wrong with that scan though and the colour wash-out might not be the scanner but the negative. In the days of lab processing they didn't always get it perfect. As said previously, you can easily put that right. |

I'm just test driving a USB record player we picked up at Aldi, I currently have Shelsley Walsh 1947 playing, recorded just now from a 78 rpm

Hi Rick, its amazing what Aldi sell, I bought a box of "O" rings from them a couple of years ago for a really silly price!

Hi Peter, it takes about 10 seconds to scan, the negative or slide fits into a carrier (both are supplied), its fixed focus. One downside of it is that 35mm negatives fit into a notch that aligns with the holes in the film, if this doesn't align with how the film went through the camera, you can loose the edge of a picture and have a slight black bar on the other side, this is the case with the picture I posted, I plan to modify the carrier to eliminate this.

Hi Colwyn500, I bought a Minolta film scanner about 10 years ago, that could scan a 35mm negative to about 40 MP, I never found I needed that size, and it has a SCSI connection, takes 1 min to scan, after the pre scan, non of my current computers have a SCSI connection!. My Minolta scanner is undoubtedly better built and better quality, but this thing plugs in to a USB, and will do most of what I need at a tiny fraction of the price. I do intend to get a SCSI-USB converter for the Minolta, but everything I need to post on this forum from 35mm will be from the cheap scanner.
Happy new year
all the best

Hi Dave, I have an adapter lens which fits my Olympus camera for copying slides but it's a slow process. Will the Maplin copier accept slides in plastic mounts or just the cardboard ones? My local store has five in stock on offer so I would purchase one if they'll do the job, cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

Hi John
Sorry I don't use slides so not sure, the internal dimensions of the carriers slide locator are 50.25mm x 50.25mm x 2.5mm if that helps?

Hi Dave, thanks for that. The square size is 50mm & the majority look about 2.5mm but I have some of a different type which look like 3mm. I'll take a couple of slides with me & persuade them to open one of the units to check, kind regards,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

Hi Dave, took a couple of differently cased slides to Maplin & there was no problem trying them in the slide holder - they fitted OK so I bought one.
Great piece of kit, very quick. Thanks for the info, cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

| Dave, I thought about buying one. But although they had several models and all reasonably priced, they had none at that "giveaway"price. I will keep popping in though, thanks for the suggestion. |

I have been looking at boxes and boxes of slides taken by my father in the 1960's wanting to find a way of getting them digital. Bought the Maplin one yesterday for £14.99 and have tested it on 20 or so slides and I am pleased with the results.

Another 'thank you' for the tip, Dave. I bought on today, all I have to do know is sort through my slide collection and see if I have actually got any which are worth copying
Cheers,
Geoff |
