Sorry about the quality of the photo`s but my flash was not working.
I came across this truck stored in a farm building yesterday.

From what I gather it is circu 1908.
Built by Renault.

A vineyard converted it into a pickup for moving barrels of wine.

I store some cars in the same building as this truck, the owner told me yesterday he might sell it to me...make me an offer he said.
It runs and drives and is structually sound, although needs some tidying up to the paintwork etc to make it into show condition.

I have looked at it many times whilst visiting the farm but only yesterday decided that it might be fun to own something like this.

Anyone out there know anything about these trucks or vehicles.
What sort of price should I start haggling at.?
What sort of price range do these trucks fetch.?

I can't really help with a value, it's a very niche thing. Go to any classic lorry event and most of the vehicles seem to be from the 1950s-1990s, which is where the mainstream classic commercial interest appears to be, early vehicles rarely seem to turn up, perhaps because they're hard work to drive when compared to newer stuff.

Buy it Smile

I was told this vehicle was eligible to take part in the London To Brighton Veteran Car Run.

As stated it is not the sort of truck to drive 60 miles to an event on a Sunday morning, you either take it to local events or trailer it to more distant events.
Purchased for the right money a good investment and lots of fun i would have thought.

There's a historic commercial vehicle run from London to Brighton, it'd be eligible for that, not sure about the veteran car run though.

Make it run, stop, and rectify any faults i.e. lights etc, but please don't take all that history away with fresh paint. Clean it with an oily rag and enjoy.

Wonderful find, but I don't think its as old as stated.Just a hunch, but I think its around mid twenties, maybe even a bit later.

I'd still like it though!

I am seeing the owner tomorrow so will ask the correct age of the Renault truck.

I will also try and find out what the truck looked like before its conversion.perhaps it was just a chassis and cab.

If I do buy the truck I will leave the patina on it.

P.S The photo`s look a bit better ,I should have tweaked them before posting. Thanks for that.

The bonnet and Rad looks slightly different
If you could see the whole registration it would be possible to find it's details from DVLA.

The Renault firm retained the dash-board radiator and coal-scuttle bonnet until quite late, into the 1930's. On the earlier cars, the bonnet stopped at the radiator and the radiator was very obvious. I believe that an all-covering bonnet that hid the radiator was available on some models in about 1921, but did not become universal to all models until the mid twenties. The vehicle in the photograph is certainly later than 1908, and might have been converted into a truck from a car.

Whatever year it is and whatever its history, it is a marvelous find. I hope you manage to secure it.

It is a 1923 Renault II camionette registration sv8600. 4 cylinder. The paint was applied about 12 years ago by it's second owner a mr Thompson in Essex. Who then had a stroke and sold it to me for £1000. I got it back on the road and parted with it for £3500 when I lived in thorney. I would be worried about the amount of weight in the back. This is exactly the same as when I had it. It left the factory (the records should be with it) as a truck chassis with a low ratio rear diff and a pair of II doors and went to a carroserie to be bodied. The plate is by the left door and was then bought by a chap that ran a gardening firm. It had originally a tin roof and canvas sides (you will see remains of turnbuckles) but this was removed a long time before. I trimmed it in red leather cloth but originally it was black. Only real mid is the second spare wheel holder as my Thompson got a lot of flat tyres. Mainly through under inflation. There are more pictures on www.renault-freres.com. Mr Thompson kept at his French house which was where he bought it from near the gardening firm (the gardeners plate is on the dash) but brought it back when he fell Ill. I registered it. Big concerns would be that the water was not drained out (looks like he has neglected it) and may well have cracked block. Also I recall he lost a brush from the mag. These can be made from brushes from rover v8 distributor caps though. It was never eligible for London Brighton car as it's not pre 1905 and not a car. A lot of the rest of what he has told you is "liberal" so I would make sure you really check it out well. I always say when buying old renaults the only thing to look for is the person selling it. I have a 1955 one now. It will,if ok trundle around at about 25-30 mph unless you fit a car diff. It also has a cone clutch which can be fun. Chassis plate is by engine and also stencilled into the original floor boards just in front of the 3 speed gear lever. Unusual features are it has a development foot brake on. You will see it is quite agricultural. Originally it would only have a combined foot and brake cable. Generally the trucks continued after the cars and used up pieces. I have tonnes more info on stuff I've done. I bought it about 12 years ago and sold I guess about 8. Regular runner for me. I think a dealer bought it so may not have told the new owner much. Certainly he did not listen to my instructions regarding oil changes etc. it's also list the band from the dyno start.
