Family are the worst for borrowing tools and not bringing them back. They hold on to stuff for weeks and eventually I have to ask them to bring my tools back or eventually I have to go and get them myself. My brother in law and son are the worst offenders. Neighbours are not too bad. Now I have a notebook in the garage and I write down who got what and when. Does anyone else have the same problem. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

I have an old saying. "I don't lend out 3 things, my car, my tools and my wife, in that order of prefference." |

I wish I could remember who I loaned my pressure washer to. _________________ Due to the onset of my mid eighties I'm no longer sprightly and rarely seen in my Austin special. I have written a book though. https://amzn.eu/d/7rwRRqL |

Not any more
Still waiting for my tin-snips from my nephew, borrowed when he was at school, he is now a director of a large company in London.
I'm Still waiting for the tin-snips
Loaned a sack barrow to my Sister, about six months later I asked for it back, "Oh I gave it to Michael" "WHY" "Well you weren't using it" so I had to buy a new one, and they get upset when you say "NO"
On the other end, I have a friend who if asked for a loan of a tool dose the job for you as he dose not like other using his tools

Not any more, unless it's a friend that I know will return things.
Not just tools either, cd's, DVDs, books ....I've had enough of not getting things back, then when you finally have to ask for the item back, you get 'I'm sure I gave it back to you'!
........that ole chestnut!
Actually, that reminds me, I lent a workshop manual to a friend about 7 months ago!......it was for a Ford E83, the funny thing is, he then lent it to a local Ford Dealership to fix their E83!!!!!
Must go and retrieve that. |

As I am sure I have said on here before, my sons and their friends knew they could borrow any tools or my cars but "Usual deposit applies"
As it is one testicle I have not lost any of my tools yet. |

I used to lend my tools out....
a lad down the street passed his test and loved to 'tinker' with his car, he would come to me for advice and to borrow tools, which was good to begin with.....
then tools wouldn't be returned so I stopped lending them to him, so he'd wait till I was at work and come and borrow them off my wife!
now all my tools are locked away in my shed / workshop and I take the only key with me everywhere (its on my car keys)
and if anyone asks to borrow any tools now, they take great offence when I reply 'NO, I've had to buy them....you do the same!' _________________ "people with money buy a Rolls Royce, people with taste buy an Alvis". |

I agree with Larry. Relatives are the worst for not returning tools. Especially sons!
When my three sons each reached 21, we bought them a full toolset each. I painted a spot of colour on each spanner, a different colour for each son and told them that every spanner in the place without paint on it was mine!
It worked! I still have a full toolset even though the boys all moved out of home 20 years ago!

I dont normally lend out tools as luckily my neighbours wouldn't know how to use them anyway, I also buy rather than borrow even though I might only use the tool once.
However I do occasional work for a local farmer and had worked on his Morris 1000 van getting it ready for its test. I had a newish tin of Plus Gas but when I was collecting my tools up couldn't find it, I assumed that I had possibly already taken it home so forgot about it. A week or so later I was up there again and as I went into the house I spotted a Plus Gas tin on the kitchen shelf! I asked where it came from and yes, it was mine. He had 'borrowed' it because (wait for it) his dogs address tag was squeeking on its collar so he gave it a squirt of Plus Gas to quieten it down!!! You couldn't make it up really! He also borrowed a Snap-On pinch bar from me, when I asked for it back it was in a bucket of cement being used as a stirrer, needless to say I dont lend him stuff now.

Plus Gas is still around, its just not in the retail shops so much as folk don't maintain stuff so much these days.

I bought a new tin the other day from our local tool store, I buy it in large cans so that I can refill my little oil can with it. Cost me around £13 I think. Some folk tell me that it is cr*p but I have used it since the mid 1960's with no problem. You can also get it in aerosol containers as well. http://www.frost.co.uk/plus-gas-dismantling-spray-220ml.html
