Mate has an 84 Silver Spirit. Class. Only trouble is it breaks down regularly with RAC attending now a common occurance
usually breakdowns are burst pipes, be it power steering, rad hose, brake flexipipe and even him driving with a flat tyre until it came off the rim (don't ask) |

i thought Rolls Royce never break down.. they "fail to proceed"
I test drove a 77 Silver Shadow II for a potential addition to our wedding car fleet - it was an absolute mess with more filler than metal. the engine was sweet but all the electrics were complete rubbish and nothing worked as it should. brakes were very iffy too! strangely it didnt have a leather interior, it didn't seem right for that sort of car not to. |

Never owned one, but have a friend with a 1927 twenty (I think), and another friend who bought a 1977 Shadow, when what he was looking for was a Sierra estate! Two years and many thousands of pounds later, he wished he'd bought the Sierra. The Shadow rotted away in places that you'd never imagine!
The killer was when he needed a rear brake flexi pipe, and was quoted £78. The same pipe fitted a Mini, for £2.80!
I haven't seen the guy for some time now, but the last I saw of the RR, it was sitting quietly rusting into the ground in his back garden, and he was driving-------------, yes you've guessed, a Sierra estate!
But it is nice occasionally to be chauffeured around in the old RR. |

There are several RR & Bentley forums out there - try this one http:\\www.bentleyforum.co.uk
You'll soon find the weak spots with these cars.
I've seriously considered an early 90's Turbo R - there are plenty out there (in the US) between 10 & 20,000 $$. The thought of owning a 170mph luxury car for 5-10% of the original cost is frankly embarrasing. I do think the classic RR grille is a bit ostentatious, but the Bentley one rather less so. Is the "used Bentley" image OK in the UK?
As for the BMW ones - they simply don't have the presence. Did you know you can buy Bentley badges to replace the ones on the Chrysler 300 look-alike?
& leather? Wasn't it traditional to have leather up front for the chauffeur for durability & Wilton Cloth in the rear for comfort? _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net

I wonder if,when they get old they end up with people who can't afford to service or repair them properly and they end up bodged.
I have a friend who runs them as regular transport, some while ago I thought of buying one.His advice was never buy a project and never buy a white one as ex wedding cars are normally rotten and painted white to hide the filler.
I know that over the years he's made a long list of parts that are common to other cars but some of the parts unique to them are very highly priced.
His cars have been vandalised a few times and he reckons they are scratched on a regular basis.
I was tempted to buy one but so far have remained loyal to my P5b. I often wonder if a roller would be much better in terms of noise and comfort anyway. |

The 4X4 looks as if it been blandly styled in the US (sorry US members!) this is probably the market its intended for. Since the split from Bentley I have thought that RR styling has been very tacky; almost child like?
The coupe looked a bit better, but it will probably be based on a 3 series chassis; not a bad chassis but one would expect more from a RR!!.
Bentley are also launching a 4X4

I quite like the Phantom, it has presence which R-R's should definitely have.
But if these recent proposals are the way that R-R and Bentley are going, with glitzy blingy off-roaders (as if), then it'll be quite sad I think - chasing footballers, plus Chinese and Russian millionaires (and wannabees).

I suppose they are chasing what they perceive is the market.
The vast majority of off roaders are bought by people who have no intention of using them off road but buy them as status symbols.Doubtless a few gormless footballers or wanna be pop stars will think getting a rolls or bentley covered in mud will somehow increase their street cred.
There's a difference between stagnating in the past, which is what killed off the british motorcycle industry and throwing your tradition and possibly reputation away to pander to a fickle audience way out of your comfort zone. |

Wasn't there once a built in "WOW" factor?
