In the Interesting Links section, Rick has posted information on the AUTOCOT, a clever device for transporting miniature motoring people.



It brought to mind the stickers that can be seen on car rear windows stating "Baby on Board"



It has oft puzzled me what that sticker means, but I am now of the opinion that it refers to a simple brake-testing device viz- place a baby on a board in the car, drive along, apply the brakes, and see how much brake pedal pressure is required to roll the baby off the board.

Does anyone have a better idea?

That's exactly what I always assumed too.

When I was a lad sitting in the front passenger seat of my father's car he always put his left out to restrain me in my seat under heavy braking. Much more effective than these new fangled seat belt things.

The car that I owned before I was married was a 1928 Ford Model A Tudor. When our firstborn came along, we needed some suitable means of carrying her on the back seat. I didn't have a suitable plank available, however I did have a battered old leather suitcase missing its lid. My wife would make up a bed in the suitcase and baby and case travelled happily on the seat.

Perhaps I should have had a 'Baby In Suitcase' sticker on the back of the car.

Many years ago, long before Australia became a nanny state, I had a HD Holden station wagon and we drove all over Victoria and New South Wales with the back seats folded flat and two cot mattresses on the floor. Nobody ever used seat belts; we didn't have to. Our three boys plus the dog happily played or slept as we drove along. None of them ever received as much as a scratched finger.
Whenever I see the "Baby on Board" sign on vehicles nowadays, I wonder if the drivers really expect me to deliberately ram their car and this sign will save them, or perhaps they are proud that they can actually produce kids - who knows?

I can well remember my father holding me back when in the front seat and heavy braking was required, always kept me safe!

Once when I was in the back seat a sudden stop caused me to shoot forward and my head came into contact with the sharp edge of the parcel shelf, had a mark on my forehead for years afterwards.

Those were the days pre the nanny state.
