I hope he has not thrown away too much in the last year - for which I am partly the cause
He had to clear a big garage (200 m2) because I a renting that from him now. There were rows of seats and back seats, not sure where these went.... But I asked him not to throw away original good material because I love old original interiors. I believe he stripped the seats, keeping most seat covers and threw away the seats.
Sorry no pics of the 544 - it just is not in my system to carry a camera / take pics although there are often many interesting cars around (a Ferrari 330 GT now, XK150 and a DB4). |
Hi,
Ok here goes. The driver's seat, and the rear seat, are slightly lighter in colour, whereas the passenger seat has more of a blue shade to it:
Maybe it once had a cover on it, meaning it has faded less than the others perhaps. Ideally I'd find a cover to match the passenger seat's.
If you could ask your contact, that would be great thanks.

Rick,
sorry - kind of negative response from my neighbour.
He only has (saved) second hand seat covers for the Amazon series, none for the 544.
But he said new covers are being made exactly to original specification, which is combination of vinyl and cloth. Not very cheap, about 150 euros for a seat back and about the same for a seat cushion. |

Ah well thanks for checking! I don't see the covers when I'm driving it so it can wait a while, and I'll look around to see what options there are.

Well touch wood the old Volvo has been running well, while I draw up a list of jobs to do. These include replacing the exhaust (it blows in several places), and replacing the water pump which leaks a little. An order has gone over to Brookhouse Volvo Parts so hopefully some shiny new parts will be ready to fit shortly.
I re-discovered a box of new oil filters while having a sort out, a relic from my Amazon days, so they'll no doubt come in handy.
I'm keen to find a "S" (for Sweden) oval country plate to fit on it, not a new one but a weather-worn 1960s example ideally, if anyone knows of one for sale?

I'm really pleased the car is a success and receiving much needed love Rick. I felt very sorry for it in Terry's yard.

Rick,
The old 544 takes me back. I emigrated to Canada in 1964 and got a job in downtown Toronto in a dealership that handled Rolls Royce, Jaguar & Volvo. I stayed with a cousin who's husband Gerry taught body repair in a school right behind this garage. One night over dinner, conversation got round to our days at work. I told Gerry that a Volvo had come in that had t-boned a lamp post. He said "Find out who the insurer is". I asked the bodyshop manager and he told me the company name. By 4PM about 10 boys arrived and hand pushed the car around the block to the school. Gerry had bought the write-off. That was on a Tuesday, by Friday the car was straightened, painted in primer and driven home. This was the last week of the term and Gerry was moving to London, Ontario to a new college. He put 50K miles on it over the next two years. As I recall he paid $400 which in '64 was £120. This was a B18 model so it could only have been a couple of years old at the time
