There is a Lidl store near us which we sometimes use and its amazing the prices of some of their motoring and outdoor stuff. I wouldnt buy their cheap and nasty tools . This week they are doing a 2 man fishing tent. for £15. I dont fish but it would be handy to take to car shows. I have bought some items in the past that were good. Have you ever bought anything from these stores.? _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

All the time.
Lidl's DeLuxe food range. is excellent (their reindeer and venison is better than from other supermarkets and equal to that from some specialist butchers) their malt whisky is rated better than most, their wines are good, their croissants are better and cheaper than any other I've found. Those 'cheap and nasty tools' often have a thee year guarantee and TUV aproval, their screen wash fluid is the best you can buy - I bought a digital micrometer there for £6.99, the identical one is on sale elsewhere for around £30
In the six years or so we've been shopping at Lidl it's been interesting to see how the customers have changed; far more expensive cars in the car park these days as people lose their prejudices and realise what good value Lidl offer (I can't speak for Aldi). |

I'm with riley with regards to Lidl, we do have them in Malta as well and most of their products are very good!
The tools are relatively cheap but do not be fooled in thinking they are rubbish, I do have some of their tools and they are very good quality! |

I like that In Crewe Aldi is on the same retail park as M&S, I've seen people park near M&S (where there are normally few spaces) and walk 100 yards down to Aldi (where there are usually loads of spaces)
The only problem I have with Aldi is that they scan the stuff far quicker than I can bag it and then you are paying and packing holding up the rest of the que
I look out for the special offers, the tools are not Britool or Snap on, but incredibly cheap, I bought some sheet metal air shears a couple of weeks ago, they have a 3 year guarantee, if they last me 2 years I'll be happy for the £16 they cost

| The trick Dave, is to shop with a plastic crate inside your trolley, put everything into it from the checkout and lift it from the trolley into the boot of your car. It doesn't fall over in the boot like bags sometimes do. |

Both companies have their roots in Germany (Lidl being in Neckarsulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany and Aldi in Mülheim an der Ruhr).
My thoughts are the fact that the German economy is one of the wealthiest in Europe, which in turn generates a high standard of living, so their 'cut-price' stores will sell high standard German imported food and goods compared to our 'Pound Stores'.
Granted I've seen UK products on their shelves, but predominantly the food aspect is German, followed by other European countries products.
Aldi's chocolate is some of the best I've eaten in years and inexpensive to boot and I haven't had a food product I didn't enjoy from either of them. |

Herself and I have just been to Aldi, Abergavenny.(we should be halfway across the channel, but that's too long a story!)
It's a new store, and I must say that if I didn't know they can do better, I would not shop there again.
On the way into the store, we had to negotiate our way round a bag of compost on the floor, then a pallet of rubbish in the aisle. The fire door was partly blocked with discarded boxes, and there was a small tray of potatoes on the floor by the veg counter. A piece of banding which got caught around my (disabled) wife's feet was the last straw. I found a staff member and pointed out these problems: he said he'd get someone to sort them out. The compost was moved, but all the other probs were still there when we left, in spite of my reporting again to the same staff member.
I've just tried to contact Aldi, but there is no email address on their website, only postal, and the 0800 number doesn't answer, though I'm not prepared to make a complaint at my cost.
Very unusual to find a store in a bad state like this, I must admit, but it was not good.
Oh, and the frozen food counter had packages open and the contents in the bottom of the chest. |

i'm not surprised these days to be honest. nobody seems to give a toss these days & im sure if you complain straight to them you'll probably get some feeble apology and it will still be the same the next time you go in there.its modern times .f.you im allright jack . |

My firm offers apprenticeships, there is a genuine job at the end..so we typically take 16/17/18 year old's on, they complete 12 months on a government funded scheme (£90 a week I think) at the end of it if they meet the grade we give them a £19k per year job. ....ok £19k is not a great wage, but they are in with an organisation where progression to much better earnings quite quickly is easily acheived , you would not believe how many drop out or just don't turn or rekon they can earn more packing shelves at Tesco to be fair & balanced we do get some great hard working successful staff.
I have to compare to the eastern Europeans who wash our cars in Salisbury's; they are so diligent, and demonstrate integrity that many could learn from.
We actually need more staff than we can recruit

I heard about Aldi's recruitment practices in Abergavenny from some of the boys at my work (stocktaking). Two or three that live round there applied and didn't even get an interview - all decent, hardworking and intelligent folks. One who did get taken on was a "friend of a friend" whose wife/girlfriend applied and for whatever reason decided against it, he went to the interview in her place and got the job anyway!
As usual, recruitment proves to be not about who's best to do the job, but who's got the best line in bulls**t. |

| Seems to be some resentment of Aldi/Lidl amongst our Welsh contributors. |
