If I had no other cars in my life then this is what I would be tempted to bid for. I know it needs some TLC but it would be a pleasure to gradually bring it back from the brink...which is where I see it at the moment.

I have no idea how much this rare beast is worth; probably as much as someone is prepared to pay I suppose.

Love it. At 19k the Reserve has been met (already?).

I love it too. Beautifully understated. Top quality throughout and probably a good driver too. I can see areas that will need attention... but nothing I couldn't handle and no need for a long laying up period. You could just get in it and drive for miles.!

I bet if it appeals to me then it will appeal to others too. I can see a collector with deep pockets paying whatever it takes; just to own it.

Hopefully, whoever gets it they it will do a minimal and sympathetic restoration and keep that lovely ambience.

The auction estimate of 20 - 30k is, I believe, realistic and would be affordable to me. However, as we have seen before, auction estimates are notoriously unreliable.

Nice to see a sensible reserve set, and agreed, the estimate looks very realistic.

Only a minor point...but the headlights were replaced recently. Unfortunately, the chrome rims don't quite match the line of the chrome embellishments on top of the wing.

I wonder if the original rims are still with the car?

( I had a niggle with my MG TC headlamps when I bought it. The owner had replaced the 8" originals and replaced them with 7" sealed beam, which didn't look right on the car. Fortunately he had kept the original lamps and I was able to have them restored (ouch!)... but the end result was worth it.)

Seeing that the current owner owns more 3-Litre Lagondas, I bet he can help with that. Or know where to find the correct rims.

I am sure you are right. It is a small world.

The more I think about this car the more I wish I was in a position to bid for it. I wouldn't go too high though.

Car sold for 21,400 GBP.

I have considerable feelings of regret.

Only consolation is there is always another deal.

Well, look on the bright side, at least you won't have to spend the rest of your driving days explaining to the great unwashed that it's not some sort of Jag. Plus you're not going to be the one spending two or three tens of thousands (or a couple of hundred hours of your own time) putting it right, only for the above to happen. Wink

A low price for such a beautiful and pretty unique car.

What would put me off fo such a car would be the worry about the exorbitant prices if having engine trouble.
With a friend I owned a classic car company years ago, and we got the order of reconditioning a Aston Martin DB4 engine. New pistons, bearings etc, the lot. We were kind of used to Jaguar XK engine prices for parts but Aston prices are of a different world! It puts me off wanting an Aston or Lagonda forever.

I remember when I was just a child, my Dad used to look after a DB5 for someone. The car arrived one day with a mysterious vibration in the engine. When Dad stripped the engine he discovered it had a slightly bent crankshaft. There was of course other, associated damage... and when he told the owner it would need a new engine, the reply was "Oh, that's what they told me at Newport Pagnel". !!

The guy had seized the engine and been given a fright at the cost of a replacement. He thought my Dad could somehow fix it on the cheap.!

Dad was not best pleased that his time had been wasted.

We never saw the fella or his Aston again after that! Razz

When I took my brother's 1931 Morris Minor for reconditioning the one man business, an ex racing driver I was told, was doing a Rolls Royce engine and showed me the pistons and a set of Bedford truck pistons. They were exactly the same dimensions but the finish on the Bedford pistons was much better and so he was going to fit them instead, and save a bundle of money as well!

Probably the worst engine my Dad ever worked on was a Rolls Royce Phantom 3. There are literally dozens of studs (70 I think) but they can be brittle and snap easily.

I think The best Rolls engine was probably the 4.9 straight six (Silver Cloud ) although opinions may differ.

Wasn't there a Rolls V8 with the spark plugs located on the underside of the V?
I believe it meant removal of both front wheels, and an underwing panel on each side, in order to access the plugs.
