My brain went wrong this morning causing me to mis-read the bedside clock and get up at 5:30. Shocked Saw on the news about the re-opening of the Midland Hotel, Morcambe and cheered up considerably.
They do still do worthwhile things in the UK (occasionally.) What a wonderful building. Tried to find a site where I could lift one of those 30s art deco posters, with no luck. Imagine your car with that facade as a background?

Pigtin, you are not the only one!

I went o sleep at some silly time last night, (Early) and woke up about 3am, decided to get up and watch a film and play on the net at 5ish, and am starting to get bored of that now, so off into town.

Cheers

Dave

We stayed the night at The Midland Hotel about 15 years ago, it was the finishing point for the coast to coast run which we used to do in the Rover. It was well overdue for being refurbished then. What a dump it was. Good to see that it has been sorted out.

I always thought Poirot's flat was somewhere on the North Circular in London. I could be wrong... I think the Midland was used in one of the episodes Confused

Hi
If you like Art Deco and are in Devon have a look at Burgh Island near Bigbury on the south coast.
http://www.abcstudios.fsnet.co.uk/burghisland.htm

I believe they used the hotel to film Ten Little N*******s.
There is also a transport interest as, edge of the beach in the photo on that site, you can also see their wading tractor/bus that takes visitors over even when the tide is in.
Google Images for more views, here is one: http://www.bristolnomads.org.uk/assets/pics/location_pics/bigbury/tractor.jpg

Yes I love that hotel, I stayed there a few years back with my 1st wife (Shh) for a weekend, its had loads of film and star interest one of which was when A.Christie went missing and was presumed dead or kidnapped, she stayed there to get away from the press and write. I would love to go back now as its been renovated even more
I knew they filmed "evil under the sun" with Peter Ustinov as poirot there
I didnt know that "ten little indians" as they changed it to was done there
Shocked

I remember seeing that wading tractor/bus a few years ago and wondered how the maintenance/wear-and-tear/corrosion problems are handled on the immersed bit. It looked awful when I saw it, suppose they have to use long breather pipes to vent the back axle etc. Or maybe they are sealed and the surrounding water cooling prevents any oil expansion.

All these things passed through my mind upon seeing it: am I some sort of nut? Confused

Hi
I was thinking of the earlier 1945 film which apparently was actually called "And then there were none".

However I have now found a reference to how Burgh Island got associated with it,
To do with
" The UK serialisation was in twenty-three parts in the Daily Express from Tuesday, June 6 to Saturday, July 1, 1939. All of the instalments carried an illustration by "Prescott" with the first instalment having an illustration of Burgh Island in Devon which inspired the setting of the story."

Did you see the the Dr Who explanation of how/why AG disappeared for 10 days, before being found in Scarborough?

Ah I got you "ten little Ns" was what the original book was called later changed to Indians but "then there were none" was the film title so as to not upset even Indians Rolling Eyes Laughing
No, I have never been a fan of Dr Who probably only ever seen a couple of episodes inadvertently
It is indeed a lovely place I think I paid about £200 a night, probably a lot more now Rolling Eyes Jasper Conran ran the kitchen too at the time, lovely food, after that he went to Quaglinos one of my favourite "dating restaurants after my divorce Rolling Eyes

We used to have an art deco flat here in Edinburgh. The original sales brochure had and rather nice painting in it.

Unfortunately most of the owners were philistines with no interest in maintaining originality, however the stairwell did remain fairly true to style.

Me too: when I first started motoring in the 50s all the Art-Deco garages were still operating. So much better than the garish supermarkets that filling stations have now become. Shocked
