After stripping down the front of the Chevy to get into the chassis and engine bay to paint and restore I've decided to strip and paint the engine as well. Funny how all this snowballs, the original plan was a quick repair and puy the truck on the road Laughing

Anyway back to the paint, the engine should be blue - and there are some remnants of colour left - but I'm not importing the exact paint from the USA!

Can anyone recommend a UK supplier for some spray or canned engine enamel similar to this colour - http://leahstockwell.com/truck/engine%20mt1.jpg

Many thanks

If I can't get anything localy then I'll definitely take you up on the offer. It looks a very close match.

Try Frost. They do a couple of blue engine paints, Ford blue and a light blue. Might be what you need. They are VERY helpful over the phone.

Hi Mate.
if it's a production paint and not a mixed one it will have a "RAL" code.

Take a unfaded sample toi a body shop or a good body shop supplire and they will match it.

It's a 1941 Chevy with a bit of disagreement on the old forums on the exact engine colour.

I've checked with frost and they have a fair range so will probably get it from them.

Cheers

what is the best paint to use on an engine so that it does not flake?
I have one of my minis engine painted with hammerite smooth but thats black and easy to match, the other mini's engine I have mixed some normal oil paint (like dulux) and painted it green (similar to BMC engine green) but it has flaked after a couple of years whilst the hammerite hasnt!!!

I dont want to use a can cause the engine is still in place and I am not taking it out!!
BTW this regards to the hunter not my minis and the colour is blue as per factory.
I cannot use hammerite since their blue is too dark.
Is there an engine enamel which can be brush painted on?

Hi

HMG supply engine paint, you can get it direct or from Frost, I have just got some for my Morris 8 from them, Think this is the firm Rick used to identify his Dodge colour?

24 years (and over 100,000 miles) ago I painted my Triumph 2000 engine with blue Hammerite, but I think it needs repainting now! At the time I was working on a shoe-string and the price of engine paint frightened me, especially as a water cooled engine should not get blisteringly hot. Unless you are a purist looking for an exact match with the original I can vouch that Hammerite is most definitely up to the job.

Jim.

Basically hammerite is just an enamel with additives and works well enough, I too painted my S Type engine in it and to this day it looks perfect Remember too though you can mix the various colours I have done it often to "get the right colour" I have just mixed a correct colour for the Traction engine using Green base with, White, Blue, yellow and Red to get it perfect.
It mixes perfectly even though the website says it isnt mixable

Got the light blue enamel from Frost - which turns out to be HMG paint.

It's not an exact match but it's pretty close.

Hi greeney thats exactly what I was thinking of doing, the hammerite blue is a bit darker than what I need so I thought of using hammerite white to obtain the shade I want!!
Have you ever sprayed it on cause I will be doing the block, head etc with a brush but was thinking of spraying the top cover!!

I spray hammerite all the time, it sprays really well the only thing is it doubles the cost as the special thinner is so bloody expensive, I tend to recycle the thinners after paintbrush cleaning for the same colour spraying that way its not so costly.
Dont breathe it in though it makes me feel sick even brushing it on and breathing in the fumes

Problem with some engine paints when sprayed over cast iron is that some castings soak up oil which pushes paint film off when block heats up.

Hot Caustic dipping is the only sure way to get this out
