Hi Buzzy
I have an FB id and 99% of my FB "friends" are fellow instructors; but they don't use it for discussion or as an advice centre for driving/instruction, instead they just post such banal remarks as, having a night out with my mates, got a break so having a brew, etc or the ones who are into religion keep putting up "uplifting texts and posters"

I think I probably click Hide on 90% of what comes up.

The most interesting posts I have read are from an old school friend from Guildford (shared birthday) who has retired to Somerset and has a Bird Ringing Blog, for which he posts links every week whn he updates it.

On the other hand the instructors and advanced drivers who post on a couple of groups I visit on Linkedin do make good use of that for expressing opinion and seeking knowledge/assistance.

I surround myself with people mainly interested in steam, and vintage cars and tractors, so a high percentage of posts made are of interest to me.

Befriend me if you like Penman, and look at some of the comments and interesting pictures my friends have posted. Simply ignore the ones you don't want to read/see like I do.

Roger, I suppose your right about the pics, but I only put pics I don't mind going on the net up, it is pretty much the same with any pictures, you put on the net with no watermark on, they are in public, and it is very hard to stop people using them, same as with forums. Even with watermarks, I would imagine it hard to prove they were yours if the mark was removed?

Cheers

Dave

Lets be honest this will be age related, anyone under the age of 40 will wonder quite why there was even a question. 40-50 there will be a reasonable uptake as most parents want to keep in contact with their kids and social media outlets are a geat way of doing that...especially when they fly away to Uny ( Where I am!). Probably the 60 year olds + wont use social media and there is nothing wrong with that. Every generation has determine how it communicates.

I have come across this challenge recently with some work I did for the Morris Register, I assumed members would have Internet access and an email account... big mistake.. many don't and never will, so we need to respect & make provision to ensure no members feel excluded by technology, especially given many of these individuals did all the ground work some decades ago to establish the club .

My boss recently had some unexpected brain surgery (he is all fine now) but one of the really positive things that came out of Facebook, was the speed and spread of communication, he has been contacted by folk that he has not spoken to for years, and that really help him in recovery.

I don't think it's quite as black and white as that. I don't want to know and I'm not even 30 (just) yet, but I've met people 70+ who use it all the time. Maybe takeup is near enough 100% amongst the kids who've grown up with it, but with any age group above that it can't be assumed.

I remember the day when I signed up, I had been thinking how useless this is, but after a short while, once you make contact with people in your interest area it really does become very clear how helpful it is, at the time of signing up I was very much one of the people who say they don't like it.

I still can't grasp however that people like and use Forums, but are scared of using FB, or dislike the idea of FB, it is essentially the same thing. An online Comunity.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

The difference that I see is that those conversing on forums are generally discussing subjects that are not personal. Facebook conversations appear to discuss a lot of personal stuff in a totally public arena.

For example, do I really want to know about friends' daughter's children potty training or see photos of the infant on the potty. What makes people think such trivia is worth being putting on the internet?

BTW - it's December 22nd, is anyone out there to read this or am I the only survivor?

Hi

Thanks for your reply Peter

I can see your point now, yes.

Personally I am selective over it all, if I don't want to read it I don't. but don't post anything I am not happy the world seeing, or wouldn't post on here, mainly just talk about steam engines on the chat part, sad aren't I.

I have found myself talking to like minded people each evening, this year instead of watching the TV, which has only been on under 10 times I would think all year.

But I do understand your view now, thanks for posting it!

Cheers and merry Christmas.

My kids set up a Facebook account for me but I've never used it properly and can't see the point. May seem strange when I enjoy message boards so much, but I can't get to grips with FB, especially the trivial nonsense that comes out of most people..... Why would I care what they've had for tea?

One saving grace IMHO..... Prospective 'friends' for my nephew seem to 'pop up' on my page and since most of them are nubile young girls I have started to log in more often!

FB users: I updated the cover picture on the OCC FB page today, it seems appropriate given recent conditions Smile

I read in todays paper that Joey Barton the footballer "tweeted" that he was at a party. So thieves knew the house was empty and raided it. How stupid is that to "tweet" that you are out.
