FISH OIL

I bet that smells lovely in the sunny weather. Not a problem over here, of course.

I was talking to a slightly inebriated person in a pub fairly recently who told me that the absolute best ever, can't be beaten, rustproofing solution, is to get old EP90 gearbox oil, warm it up, and pour it into cavities and so on. Quite aside from the smell, which is probably up there with rotting fish in the 'unpleasant smells' chart, he didn't seem to have any explanation as to why his employer, a local luxury car manufacturer who shall remain nameless, didn't ditch all their fancy-dancy expensive galvanising and wax treatments and just use his suggestion.

I've heard a lot of people swear by using various old oils, environmentally it's a bad idea when it gets warm and drips onto the road, also I have read that old oils can be carcinogenic, though in what quantities I don't know.

Molasses is a good one for removing rust, I haven't tried it yet but am having very good results with soaking small parts in 'ph Down' which is basically phosphoric acid, and I get better results soaking in a 10% solution than I do painting on neat acid, for some reason. I don't have a bowl big enough to dip the entire shell, sadly.
