Hi buzzy, just to let you know your not the only one with starting problems on pugs.I had a 106 which drove me bananas !!
Tell tale signs of unburnt fuel on glow plugs suggest a heating element failure---hence the black smoke on start up.I had to change the plugs on numerous occasions, only to find that the villian of the problem was the relay supplying the power was faulty---burn out of the elements resulted.
I`m not sure if the glow plugs are up to standard these days, but it pays to buy the best in the end.Sounds like you`ve solved the problem but you could save yourself a lot of aggro--dispense with pug and get someone else to have the early morning blues, just like i did !!
Cheers---Ray the Rocker.... |

Hi
Cheers for your comments.
Yeah three sets of plugs in as many months, and the old ones are dead, teated them today.
Could be that relay you speak of!
I may try changing that, as the NGK plugs I am buying are getting dear now, well not dear but when you have to do them every month it clocks up!
I would like to have this car, or another really cheap petrol for a month or two, whilst I look for a good van, to save having to be rushed into buing the first van I find.
Any one got a very cheap reliable runaround they want rid of?
Cheers

In all I have had 5 405s and one 406 on taxiwork as well as a Citroen BX with the same diesel engine. If I have to point a finger at all it is to say that if one of these engines ever develops head gasket trouble you have recurring problems. Otherwise all gave long, sterling and reliable service, but then I never employed drivers who did not seem able to understand how to drive properly and of course safely. I would not have expected my cars to last a fortnight with many who applied!
How do the people you know drive!

Not saloon cars but Vans, when I had my maintenance business I bought 8 Astramax diesels all new all at the same time from the same dealer
Everyone of them turned out different. I did notice though that the smoothest and quickest van was the one that was driven by the younger driver, the one driven by one of my sparkies at 30mph everywhere was sluggish.
If I was out and about and I saw one of my vans dirty I used to fine them a tenner _________________ www.OldFrenchCars.com

well jim, it is true that same model cars will differ from one to another but I see too many troubles with french cars and very little or inexistent trouble with japanese cars (I am talking moderns here)
I had a friend who before the pug 206 HDI SW had a hyundai same as mine and never gave him the tiniest of trouble, he drove in the same manner both cars but the pug always had trouble with the ball joints and wishbones, he ended up selling it.
The almost brand new 607 is a taxi so it got a bit of a hammering but the owner took good care of it.
One 306 diesel belonged to a colleague (woman) and was a 19 diesel, same engine as the 405 and it had the head done twice and the radiator changed twice also, a neighbour with a 306 sw same diesel engine had also trouble with the radiator and head, my cousin had a 106 14 diesel and also had trouble with the head and eventually changed the engine to a more modern 15 diesel from the second generation 106 (good care was also taken of this car cause he is a nutter with cars just like me)
The 306's i m not sure but they were not rough cars and kept in very tidy condition so I presume good care was taken in servicing etc, over here cars r quite expensive so people tend to take good care of theirs and keep for a longer period than most do in uk.
The colleague who had this 306 (which got totalled) bought a 307 petrol sw and that also had issues with the rad and head and leaked oil and it was only 3 years old at the time!!
I have had about 4 pugs but they were bought and sold to make a little profit so didnt stay for long, only one gave me some trouble with the glow plugs but when new ones were installed all went well again and it was the same 19 diesel engine this time on a 206!!
sorry for the long post but twas Jim's fault he asked and I obliged! |
