Is there not a 'clip' of some sort that could lock the ball joint in situ? Like certain carburettor linkages, etc? Doesn't have to be 'of the age' either?

The problem only occurs when you have long pedal travel, if the brakes are blead and adjusted correctly, I doubt its worth worrying about Smile

I have to engage low gear when driving down Morley Lane into Little Eaton, Derbyshire (where I live). It is a 1in 7 gradient and has caught out many a "boy racer".
