The Mistress was 88 today, well it is now yesterday, Saturday.
She had a play! We had a good day, no cake, but plenty of coal....

Today, well yesterday now, I decided to start Job two on a very long list on the Steam roller. I cut the Bottom out of the Water tank, and found half of the original bottom in there too, so cut that out. Found the new one had been brazed in, so ground it all up nice, 7 grinding discs later, (its a fair size), then have wire cup brushed the inside, 3 times over. I was going to Shot blast it, and may still get it done, if the paint I use needs to have a scrumptiously clean base. I think I have found some old paint that seems to be under all the rust, almost leaching out of the metal, good job I had a good mask on.
The paint I plan to use, is Apexior No.3, not the cheapest tanking paint, but I only want to do this once, and I am told this will last me out...
Anyone used anything different? |

Hi Dave
I can't quite visualise where the water tank is or its size was it leaking?
Can't help you with the paint; other than there are some epoxy paints around , that have a really strong binder, allowing them to be painted on metal surfaces that are less than perfect, and they don't absorb water. I would expect the steam fraternity would have a view and recommendation?
I will have to come and see this Mistress of yours

Hi
I sent UKDave a PM
I have a long standing dilemma, which is constantly on my mind at the moment, the colour the roller will get painted eventually, when I get round to it, originally Robeys were one of two colours I am told, and there is a disagreement over which, Napier Green, or Mid Brunswick, I prefer Napier, but the other option is to have it painted in a livery of my own, as this was also offered from Robey.
Big Question is what colour should this livery be. Originally the engine was at Limmer and Trinidad asphalt company, so if I could find out whet they had, that is a possibility, the other main user was Wirksworth Quarries, or I do a livery of my own.
Anyone got any idea's, links to colours etc?
Cheers

Hi
If you take a trip over to Wirksworth there are a number of places where there might be info about Wirksworth Quarries.
Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. http://www.e-v-r.com/
The National Stone Centre. http://www.nationalstonecentre.org.uk/
and the Narrow gauge railway http://www.steeplegrange.co.uk/ that is down the first road on the left after you enter the B503 from this junction.

Just a long needed update.
Slowly working away at the Roller, lots to do.
I have currently put a new Barrel in the boiler, about to put the new tubeplate in and have a new fire box on the way. New bearings in lots of places, full repaint to come...
Just describes 16 months hard work in a couple of lines, lol
Back in the shed now!
Cheers

Hi
Over half way on the boiler at least, lots of work to do on the rest of it as it goes back together though.
Cheers
