If there's one thing I love about this thread it's those three magic words:-

"Made in England".

So rare today.

I wonder why some things state, 'Made in England', some 'Made in Scotland', some 'Made in the UK'. Other than the obvious, has their been a return trend to 'Made in England'?

I think you're only allowed to put "Made in EU" on now.

You do occasionally see made in England, I saw some kitchen knifes the other labeled as such, the reality is that relitavley few goods are made in England.

When I worked for Sharp Manufacturing we used to "make" VCR's and Microwave ovens, which all had a little Union Jack sticker with "made in U.K.' applied (we were in Wrexham North Wales) , I recall a group objecting to this sticker as all the parts were actually made in Japan exported to the UK where we assembled them, so the company then had certain of the more bulky components such as the VCR plastic chassis or the pressed steel top cover made in the UK, but all the clever stuff was still made in The east.

an extract from an article about Hong Kong. http://gwulo.com/node/6190

quote " So, what did Hong Kong do, with the Chinese border closed?

It made stuff. Pretty rubbishy stuff for the most part - clothing and the sort of small things that could be made in that typical Hong Kong structure, the flatted factory - a building looking like an apartment block but which actually contains several manufacturing businesses. After all, the owners of most of Shanghai's manufacturing businesses had relocated to Hong Kong.

This was the age of "Empire Made" - stamped on toys and gewgaws of every description but always cheap. "Made in Hong Kong" was a turn off for people reared on Fu Manchu and the Yellow Peril and Japan in WW2; "Empire Made" was OK. Everyone in Hong Kong will tell you that Li KaShing started off making plastic flowers - a very typical Hong Kong export. Of course, not everyone who made plastic flowers became one of the world's richest men.

end quote.
