My next job is re-wiring for some reason the regulator has not been connected up as it is in the workshop book - only 1 wire in the A post and none in the A1? hope this will improve its running? |
Hello 1st pop, Ive just been down to my garage and took these snaps of my own pop-1955 103E-converted to 12volt.

I used a dab of grease here n there to hold the gasket in position while offering the sump up to the bottom of the engine.

| Flywheel, theres one thing I dont understand. The regulator looks to be connected wrongly. Or are you not running a dynamo? |

You are right UJ there is no connection on the "D" post which is where the main dynamo output would be.

UK, thanks for confirming my suspicions. I wonder how it charges?
I do remember someone posting with battery problems. Could it be Flywheel, I wonder? I cant find the post... |

Hello you guys,
Thanks to you all for posting, I'll put some more pictures on here when i get the old boy off his stands and running about.
I guess i was very lucky when i bought this car, i was in the right place at the right time. ( and the wife liked it too) The chappie who owned it before me, had lost interest, and i think the car had been laid up for nearly four years unused. It was running: but in a dirty state.
After 16 years of my ownership Ive done some work on him, Rebuilt engine, exhaust, new boot lid, wheel bearings, and then just tidying and cleaning up the paintwork and interior.
I do remember one heart stopping moment, when i took him for mot one year. I left him with the mot tester, but when i returned to the garage this chap admitted he'd left the ignition switched on to test the trafficators, and the coil had exploded. ( i never went there for mot again.)
Ive just nipped down to the garage to have another look at my reg box, and yes the D wire is connected, and im running a dynamo. ive taken another pic hope it comes out ok. Ive never had any trouble with charging.( fingers and toes crossed now ive said that)-Had me going there uncle joe...LOL.
Pic shows me pointing to wire connected to the "D"

You had me going for a minute...I was beginning to think that you had a one wire alternator set up or something with a totally new way of being wired in! |

Hi 1stpop
The control box has several fuctions, it does act as a regulator , but also protects the dynamo by compensating for load, this is why you have the "A" conection which goes to the battery and the "A1" connections which serve the "accesories" lighting etc. There is no advantage in having all circuits fed from the "A" terminal. Some control box's have more than one "A1" with fused protection for different loads.
| Uncle Joe wrote: | Personally I used to connect the F and D terminals on the regulator together. That gave full dynamo output to the battery all the time. Of course, when I forgot and left them on too long, it did have a tendency to desroy the battery....
|
What you have created here UJ is known as a "Shunt DC Dynamo" the dynamo voltage and current would just keep going up until either the battery failed, the wiring burned out or the dynamo field coil failed
We have to experiment with these things to see what happens |

I think I've worked out the problem with the wiring - It looks as though it has been wired up for a three brush generator and it only has a two brush one on (this is the correct one for the car) - after looking through a couple of pop owners hand books I found a couple with the wrong wiring diagram printed but luckily mine has a note added later by the publisher about the change in generator..
Gonna put it straight and and possibly add a couple of fuses too - just to be safe |
