There's one at the Royal Oak, Worleston on Sunday. I'm hoping to go to the Coachman, but it'll depend on the weather. I was intending to do the Cronkinson's Farm meet last Sunday, but it was bitterly cold and then got very wet, so I didn't. I'd forgotten about that Autojumble, I might pop along to have a look.

Busy at the Coachman this morning, I had to park on the grass and I was only ten minutes after the 9am start time. Apparently this meeting runs at 5pm every Wednesday through the summer, though that makes it clash with the one at the Farmer's Arms in Ravensmoor. I was told that the Swetenham Arms meeting has started up again on Tuesday evenings.

I went to the Cheshire Autojumble today. Not massive, but not bad for a first event, though I had a few detours for closed roads. Probably about 12-15 stands, though a fair number of those were motorcycle parts. They were starting to pack up not long after 10am.

We wandered over to that one also, quite chilly. Farmer's Arms is tonight, Tern Hill (?3) tomorrow (Thurs) evening also. Yes Swettenham Arms is back up and running again, packed there last night.

I have heard that Tern Hill Hall are now charging entry for their car gatherings, three pounds a car, with some of that going to the Air Ambulance.
Meeting at the Old Piggery, Combermere, on April 19th.

Yes 3.00 per car at THH, first meet tomorrow.
We went to the Farmer's this evening, a few vehicles turned up but not as many as I'd expected given the weather. I think there were a couple of other similar gatherings further north which may have diminished the turnout somewhat.

Cholmondeley Arms Sunday morning meetings for 2026 are:
26th April
31st May
26th July
30th August
25th October.
Similar at the Three Greyhounds, Knutsford way are on 28th June and 27th September. Nothing listed for the Mainwaring Arms, part of the same group, which is a pity.
The Classic Shows web site disappeared for a few days but has now come back with no mention of events at Cholmondeley Castle this year.

Sorry, but THH has absolutely no chance of taking three quid off me for the pleasure of giving up an evening to take my classic car there! I must have spent around 20 quid with them on food and drink when I went to a car meet there last year. As far as I'm concerned, if they can't make a decent profit out of that, then, to put it bluntly, they can bugger off!
For goodness sake, in comparison, the Cholmondeley Arms even provides their car club members (free to join and no subscription fees either) with free coffee and a bacon butty when they turn up to their event, and it's not even a draw for 'ordinary punters' as it's held on a Sunday morning before the pub opens for 'ordinary' business!
Plus they don't have some rather intrusively loud musical act outside (and causing potential copyright infringement issues for those filming and promoting the event on YouTube)! So, if you want to save some dosh, THH, bin the outdoor music and don't try to charge people for providing the main attraction to your event, and for the 'privilage' of spending money with you for refreshments while they're there!
As to the Piggery meet, if the forecast for dry weather holds then I'll probably see you there this Sunday, Mike. I think we need to support these free events, together with the venues that host them, so I'll be forking out for a coffee and bacon butty to support the Piggery Cafe if I attend. |

I feel I've missed the boat a bit with Tern Hill Hall, after I kept meaning to go to one. If I'm prepared to forgive the entry fee, I've heard a similar response from a lot of other people so there will be far fewer vehicles there. I think they might have trouble competing with all the other early evening meetings that are running, who don't charge an entry fee. Maybe they felt it was getting a bit too popular and would rather have fewer cars each paying a little bit than have a load and hope that some will buy something. It's a bold move.
I'm pretty out of date on costs, though - I see people just buying coffee and the like (anywhere, not just at these venues) and think of it as a very expensive way to get a drink. I have indulged once or twice at the Piggery, though often when I feel like a brew the queue is too long, and by the time it's gone away, it's almost time to leave. I was appalled at the cost of their bacon rolls, but they're not really different to the ones on offer at the Coachman the other week, and cheaper than some places. A plain burger from a street vendor during Nantwich Jazz Fest was about GBP8 this time. I need to adjust my perspective on these things, really.

Yes, the bacon rolls are a bit on the steep side at the Piggery, but needs must when my tummy rumbles! As for the THH event, I only went to one (last year) and it was a very hot evening, no shade in the back field and huge queues for food and drink. I wasn't too impressed with the food I got either, after queueing for about 10 minutes (BBQ'd burger and fries) as they put some sort of sloppy cheese and bacon sauce over the chips, which I thought spoilt them. I definitely won't go again now they've started charging.
I'm not against classic car shows charging for booking, as they have pretty huge overheads and stand to lose a fortune if it rains and gate money is virtually non-existent. But, in my opinion, pub/hotel type venues, who have very few additional overheads in staging a car meet, are taking the proverbial if they try to charge exhibitors. I hope it really backfires on them. |

Gawsworth is the 4th, bank holiday Monday, Willington Hall is on Sunday 3rd. That would have been a very unfortunate clash.

A good turnout at the Cholmondeley Arms yesterday morning. I got there early based on the great weather from the previous day, but Sunday started off cloudy and quite cold and for a while it looked like it might be quiet. After a bit the others started turning up and it was probably one of the busiest I've been to, with a lot more cars on the nearby cricket club. There was evidence of the truck run going past on the main road, though I heard more than I saw, and a few more classics were coming past later on perhaps on the way back from somewhere.
