Rick: A load of Morris Commercial PU8s which might help you with a date for the RMK registration on the main site.

Great pic.

A small number of PU 8cwt trucks have surfaced in Australia.. most likely they were issued to Australian Army units in the Middle East . And being of sound convict stock, the Aussies were reluctant to give them back.

We were passed by an early 80s Ford Granada yesterday whilst walking at lunch. It was bright yellow with dark brown interior, sounded quite good.

If the prices of Porsche 911s keeps falling, we might see more of them about as they return to enthusiasts rather than investors.

I believe they are the kind of car that should be driven...rather than languish, gathering dust in a collection somewhere.

I was followed into work this morning by a G Registered Ford Escort, metallic blue, tidy but not restored.

This came through Worleston yesterday.

Duke of Gloucester, fresh from overhaul, with a train of members of the society that overhauled it. It should have left Crewe at 10.29, but cows on the line near Gobowen caused it to be delayed until 1pm.

Ah yes. The Duke. A BR Class 8 prototype as envisaged by R. A. Riddles at Derby. This magnificent machine was unfinished when it was withdrawn from service in 1962 and sent to the great scrapyard in Barry.

This must be one of the most extraordinary examples of Steam locomotive rescues. If it had not been for the actions of a schoolboy, who saw potential in what was basically a wreck, this marvellous and rare 3 cylinder loco would have been lost to the world.

It was so far gone that it was dubbed "the impossible dream".
It brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.

Fabulous!

The Duke did work for eight years.
"The Duke was based on the BR Standard Class 7 Britannia design. It incorporated three sets of modified Caprotti valve gear, new to British locomotive engineering and more efficient than Walschaerts or Stephenson valve gear. Due to errors made during the original construction of The Duke, it was regarded as a failure by locomotive crews due to its poor steaming characteristics and its heavy fuel consumption. Trials undertaken by British Railways also proved disappointing, revealing problems with the draughting of the locomotive, which caused difficulties in adhering to timetables.

Consequently, the unique locomotive had an operational life of eight years, comparatively short for a British steam locomotive."

I understood that during the restoration they got the original drawings from NRM York and found that the middle cylinder wasn't to spec and that it was this among other things that caused it's poor performance. Once it was built to spec it was a different engine altogether delivering what it was intended to do originally.

I realised he was in service for eight years ...but the rest of the story I found most interesting. Very Happy

They were incredibly fortunate to have the original drawings to work from!

Was that the one I remember reading about that despite having "radical" Poppet valves also had the disappointing performance?

What was going on, that that group should all be together?

It looks like it could be a VCC of GB outing. They do at least use their old cars!

I'm not sure, but they were parked close to a house owned by a chap who has several cars, and another one who has a steam engine. I've seen some of the cars locally. I was just on the way home from my shed and saw them parked there.
