My Morris 8 is ***** , Oh I am not allowed to say or write the colour as it might offend people that are.........Oh I can't say that. The only reason words become offensive is because they are deemed to be offensive. It is a stupid way that a minority wants to be pittied because they have not learned the rhyme "sticks and stones......". I look forward to living in a grown up world. _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1

I thought black was the accepted description that replaced some terms more associated with slavery. The Black Power movement used it with pride.

If snow was black we may not be allowed to build snowmen.
But maybe we are getting a little too much into this subject ...... |

Clearly you've never seen me after I've been under the Jag for a few hours.

Agree completely marina. There'll always be professional idiots around who specialise in getting upset on other people's behalf, and changing things to make themselves feel useful and important. Maybe they should ask the people they think are being offended, before being so officious. Or simply just go away. IMHO naturally.
But this isn't being very festive, so let's leave it there for now eh

Lenny Bruce did a very good sketch about the use of words. They are after all just words. I do not care if anyone calls me fat, stupid, bald, ugly, it does not change what I am (which is probably fat, stupid, bald and ugly). _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1

I once worked for a company that would not allow Father Christmas to be mentioned because the term was 'gender sensitive' Instead we were required to say "The Christmas parent!"
I also have it on good authority that the PROTOCOL UNIT of a local organisation has advised against using the term 'visionary' or 'far sighted' when writing reports. They say it offends blind people! |

As a driving instructor we never say the word fail but that the pupil was unsuccessful with there test, God help us with the thought police (f#@k did I say God that's going to offend someone - oh no I said f#@k now doubt that will rub some one up the wrong way too aaaaaaaaaaaarg this is driving me mad) |

| If you prefer your coffee black, don't be surprised if you have to ask for 'coffee without milk' in certain government departments... |

As in:
Customer: "Coffee, please - no milk".
Wait-person: "I'm sorry, Sir, we're out of milk. Would you like your coffee with no cream?" _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net

The topic has moved a little away from the title, but I will add this here rather than start a new thread.
A very large international company, ( I do some work for them) has just sent out an e-mail advising employees to limit the amount of "business jargon" and asks that each employee looks very carefully at how they contruct e-mails. It appears that the phrase "zero-sum game" had been used in an e-mail that had a senior executive as one of the recipients.
Apparently he had to refer to Google in order to find out what the phrase meant, (so did I).
I do not know where all of this will lead, but maybe there is yet hope for our language.
Also included in the e-mail was a copy of a previous memo that asked employees not to use "texting style abbreviations" and also to ensure that their spell checkers were not only turned on but also used as a way to improve the quailty of e-mail communication.
So I have taken this on bord and I can't sea me having issues with it going forward.
