Evening all,

Are there enough people here interested in what are commonly referred to as "modern classics", or "future classics", to make it worth adding a category in?? Say 80s/90s cars, ie not necessarily proper classics Wink but getting on a bit, and starting to appear at shows etc.

I'd be interested to know whether you a) think it's a good idea (and if so why), b) think it's a terrible idea, or c) you're not fussed particularly either way Smile

If such a category were to be added, it'd be for a trial period of a month or two to gauge interest, then a decision made whether to run with it or set fire to it with a gallon of Ethyl, some twigs, and a rolled-up copy of The Motor Smile

I too think its good idea - the term "classic" means different thing to every one you ask - even "collectible" and "cherished". Mk5 Cortinas and all Sierras are now quite rare so its nice to think someone will preserve/restore and run one - there are many others too.

Worth trying though if the cars featured are as diverse as those sold under 'classic cars' on Ebay it'll potentially include just every car made (and lorry, bus etc.)

Sorry not my cup of tea but its a big enough world to cater for all tastes I guess so give it a go. Dont get me wrong todays old banger is tomorrows classic I know that, its just that my interests are set from the 1960s period back to before the war. Keep it in mind that there are other web sites that serve this period already so do we need to go down this route on here?

Rick

Why do you think such a section is required?

I don't think anyone with a more modern classic has been criticised on here for their liking of a newer car. But I suspect that unless they own an older classic as well not many such owners come to the forum owing to the word "OLD" at the top of this page.

I would prefer no change.

Just about every make and model from the 80's and 90's has its own web presence, but us older folk cannot understand a word of the contributions as they seem to have lost all the vowels and the shift key from their keyboard. Rolling Eyes

But I salute Rick for (as always) seeking the opinions of forum members before introducing new ideas.

I also agree with Brian and Peter. The name of the forum is OldClassicCar which says it all. Any car manufactured recently will one day become a classic car. Albeit some cherished more than others. When the day it becomes a classic comes it can be discussed in the forum.

Just my thoughts.

I personally prefer the older cars and enjoy the forum as it is now.

However, I can't see what harm it would do to add a new category and see if it becomes popular. Those who are not interested in the newer stuff needn't venture inside the new area! I can certainly think of a few cars of the eighties and nineties that I'm sure will become classics as time passes.

I'm not saying it is or isn't required really, but I'm conscious that things can stagnate with anything if they aren't periodically reviewed. Throwing ideas out into the ring seems like the best way to get an overall view from the regular visitors on here, and then make a decision.

Last thing I'd want to do is alienate any of the regulars (not that I'd see that happening necessarily), whilst keeping up with the inevitable march of time and the gradual appearance of later cars at shows and in classic car discussions elsewhere. I don't particularly want the forum to grow to any great degree, but equally sometimes things need a spot of fine tuning to keep the topics interesting etc.

Equally it may be that a separate category for vintage and pre-war cars may encourage more owners of older iron to join up, who knows?

Your input as always is much appreciated Smile

Seems to hinge on the word "Old" rather than the word "Classic"

I don't really see any advantage to splitting things up. I like the simple approach and can scan through a particular Subject and read the ones that appeal and skip those that don't.

What happens in the case of someone who is interested in "Ford Anglias", for instance. I quite like seeing the progression of a particular model and name. What if the same model was built in years either side of the "cut off date".

But please don't stop throwing new ideas into the ring.

...... and on the subject of Classics - Modern.. I am about to post a photo in the Mystery section. It is 1960 ish and I remember seeing the car around town, (Barnsley) it cropped up in a photo of some buildings I am currently researching.
