I have looked into this straight after it was listed.
It is going to be a bit like the old story about the original broom.
It is original but has had three new handles and six new heads in its life.
You would be better building one from scratch, done properly who would know the difference.
To be honest how much of the original would be left.....a few cupboard catches and hinges.
Mind you they rebuild historic racecars and the only original bit is the steering wheel.

thats a shame GF, it looked a good project. I did wonder why he took off the roof and what sort of job he did to replace the floor. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! ( Oscar Wilde)

| Should 'replica' historic caravans be listed as such when sold? I know it cannot be possibly policed but what happens if you buy a historic caravan and find it is a 'triggers broom' you have purchased. Any thoughts on the subject? |

I suppose that is a possibility, not that I have any such worries about my own van which came with a comprehensive set of restoration images and written history. I do feel though that vans which are 99% or whatever % matters that 'triggers brooms' should be identified as such. I know this subject is a minefield in the historic car world also. |

If you purchased this caravan and then found out that the front, rear and side walls had rot in them you would replace them like for like.
If the floor was rotten you would reinstate a new one.
The roof needs renewing anyway.
If the chassis is rotten you would need to replace sections or the whole thing.
How could you then take it to a vintage show, and put up a sign saying something like.......
1930`s caravan,fully restored,original fixtures and fittings etc.
You have basically built a new caravan
even the original fixtures and fittings were probably taken from other derelict caravans from various places.

Poor old van whats wrong with it ,there`s plenty of orignal van to reuse with out calling it a repo
There are lots of vintage vans in use that where in as bad if not worse than this one, before restoration, in fact one other so called" Eccles" comes to mind, you know the one am on about , gresham
The world of vintage vans would be a alot smaller if vans like this where left to rot just because its not all orignal, and i hope someone takes it on
A tip for dateing vintage van`s if the wall`s are clad in ally, its more than likley post war, "Eccles "like the majorty of propriatry caravan makes, stoppted using hardboard for outer skins in the late 40s , as it was still on ration and hard to obtain, and due to the end of the war, surplus ally was avaialble off ration OVM |

Actually, been doing a bit of research on this National. Seems it was Eccles first attempt at a cheap mass produced caravan. Started production mid 1939 and stopped begining of 1940 as they went onto war production. So a VERY rare caravan. Worth saving after all I think. Had some photo's sent to me today and the interior looks sound enough, so you have original chassis, axel, wheels, body, and some interior. I think less have been restored, a certain 1956 Willerby Vogue comes to mind, which I see has been paired back to just the outer skin now and being rebuilt with modern materials. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! You have only 3 months to get it show worthy,it will not hurt to burn some midnight oil.

hi Gresham
no, would be nice, but I only got 24 hours a day and that seems to be taken up with MORE than enough stuff.
I hope someone does get it restored though. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! ( Oscar Wilde)

| Interesting: I always wondered when visiting HMS Victory in Portsmouth, how much of the original ship is actually left!! |
