My dad first bought a car in 1963 when I was 17. It was an SS1 Airline saloon. That was sold to America  After that it was all sorts from a Phase 2 Vanguard, various Cortinas and the like until I fled the roost. I think it was a Skoda Estelle he had when he died. But that was sold on. What was the first car in your family.

Larry,
Do you remember where your dad got the Airline from? Was it Uddingston? The reason I ask is I have a cousin who lived in Uddinston and he told me of an Italian family who had an Airline when he was doing his apprenticeship. That would have been in the late 40's. He went to Canada in '55 so he didn't know what became of the car.

When my father got a job that required travel his employer provided an Austin A40 woodie. I think we had that car from about 1953.
Unfortunately he seriously wrote it off in 1956 and after some time in hospital he was given a Hillman Husky. It survived for a couple of years but was wrecked by a Ford Prefect that came round a corner on the wrong side of the road.
My father's employer then provided other Huskys over the years but we weren't allowed to use them for private use and in 1957 he brought our first car, a 1952 Austin A70 Hereford.
After a few years with the A70 he changed it for a 1954 Humber Hawk that survived until my sister wrote it off shortly after passing her test.

The SS1 Airline was originally bought by my brother in law from a scrapyard in Blantyre. It used to belong to Valerio the ice cream family from Cambuslang and was taken over by the army as a staff car during the war.My dad sold it in 1964 to a car museum in Philadelphia. The registration was YS 3378. I have photos of it somewhere. Wonder how much that would be worth now. Can photos be posted.

You might be right. I don't actually remember where it was. I wondered about on Mull or possibly the south of Skye.

I'm betting it's the same car. There couldn't have been that many Airlines around Lanarkshire AND there's the Italian connection too.

Re MSC502. I think you will find it is Ornsey Lighthouse, Skye.

I couldn't home Google Streets on to the exact location, but the road network has changed and street view vanishes on the old road.
The photo location is not many miles from the Mallaig Ferry, so maybe it was the first photo shoot of your holiday. |

Well done you Canadian foreigner!
We were staying in the Manse at Ardvasar. Apart from running a B&B the minister was also the local postman, policeman, gamekeeper and poacher.

It probably is the same car and as not many people at that time other than Valerio, who were big in the ice cream business could probably afford to own such a car. I reckon its the same car.......small world eh.

Yup! Go on, go for the full set. 
You might get the DEE457 location but NSF376 is a bit more challenging (and I don't have a clue as to where it was.)

DEE457. Guessing that you were going back to Skye or Mull, then Mallaig or Oban.. Ro-Ro's didn't come to those routes until around the early 70's.
It would be after 1959 if that is the rear window of a 105E that I can see.
There used to be a front ramp, service to Mull from Lochaline. Only used it once, had to reverse the Granada Estate and 15ft of caravan off, just as the tide started to turn.
After 3 attempts and an ever increasing lateral angle, we put it back on the ferry and they took a run at the ramp like a scene from D-Day.
With both ferry and Ford engines at high revs I made one quick reverse lunge . However, we were at such an angle now on the slip that it took nearly an hour of chocking, and forward and back to get things aligned enough to reverse the rest of the way up the slipway.
Later on that vacation we were in the outer Hebrides when the clutch showed a couple of signs of slipping. We camped on a garage forecourt for 3 days while a clutch was brought in from Stornaway.
Great times... I love Scotland... |
