I have the engine out of my dad's Anglia for a rebuild. The car was Ziebarted from new and the engine bay is covered in black underseal-type material. Now would be the ideal time to remove it to reveal the original paint. Does anyone have any ideas what solvent to use? Tried petrol/diesel mix I use for cleaning - softened it but still difficult to remove. Tried tar remover - even less effect.

If the Ziebart was fresh neat petrol would have melted it. After so many years petrol would not be a good option and is not environmentally 'PC'.

It is expensive to experiment with chemicals etc. It is worth contacting a few chemical companies.

Try contactng the following company, tell hem what you want and ask if their product will give you the result you seek. If it does not, they may point you in the right direction.

Heat with a blow lamp or, safer, hot air gun and should easily scrape off.

Watch fumes so do outside

Thanks for replies.
Phil - I was hoping to leave the paint below in good condition, which is why I didn't try heat.

you will have to chip it off and take it to bare metal and start again, you wont lift it off and keep original paint below

If it is hard then it will chip off with an air chisel with a blunted blade and the air set very low (so it just rattles). If it is soft a hot water pressure washer will get it off. I know - as I have just removed bucketloads from a Spitfire Mk 3 that has been in the workshop.
