Back in December I caught wind on another forum about this car, which had surfaced at a local house clearance auction. We went to look at the car on the day before the sale, expecting a wreck considering it had no reserve nor tax and test so was pleasantly surprised to discover it was an solid, unmolested one family owned from new car with a genuine 39,000 miles and a ton of history, including MOT certificates going back to the early 70's. However the auction is very busy on sale days and we predicted it would end up going for thousands after a mega bidding war, but we still decided to go to the sale just to see how much it fetched. The advertising for it was pretty much non-existent, with no mention of it in the catalogue nor a lot number on it, just sat in a corner next to two skips covered in snow. I'm sure most visitors never even knew it was in the sale!! Anyway I still registered for a bidding slip just in case it went cheap, as it seemed nobody else was even bothering to get the keys to give the car a looking over!! After around 3 hours waiting around for it to come up, the bidding started at £1000 with no interest, so it was hastily dropped to £500. Then the war started between me and one phone bidder, who opted out at £1000, (which was the maximum limit I was prepared to go on it myself...) making me the auction winner!!
Some better quality ones taken the following morning. The only work needed was the replacement of the electric fuel pump, and the freeing off of the rear brakes to get the car roadworthy again. After a few jump starts and some fresh petrol it was running like a dream, and the auto box was changing with no problems. These checks were made after I paid for the car too so it was certainly a gamble... It appears to be entirely original apart from a pair of new sills and an offside (steel ) front wing. We managed to get it MOT'd shortly before Christmas, the tester being overwhelmed by the condition especially the underside which he claimed was like new.
As far as I know it was never taken to any shows by the previous owner, a Miss Edna Hundley from Ruislip and in the few years before it was laid up in 2003 it was only just reaching double figure mileages between MOT's. There are still a number of tasks left to do on the car, including replacing the heater valve, sorting out the collapsing driver's seat and tiding up the lower half of the body which has seen some light scraping and bad aerosol action over the years.

Until last year I ran a Mk2 A55 as a regular user, a little (!) scruffy in the paint department but underneath as sound as a pound. Another one I should probably have hung onto

Here's a hand painted, fibreglass winged example being used as a daily by an elderly couple in Hemel Hempstead (apparently for over 20 years!) which I often see on a regular basis. There was also a badly resprayed blue with a white stripe pre-suffix A60 used regularly by a demolition worker near me up until last year but it's now been sold.

The first car that I owned was an A60, Snowberry White, 7134 DP. Changed it for a series 6 Morris Oxford, still have some fond memories!

Finally got round to getting photos of some paperwork that came with the car, looks like the family must have been motoring for at least two decades before buying this Austin judging by the age of some of the road maps. The period 'Barnacle' St. Christopher ashtray was on the dashboard but it's now been removed as none of us smoke. I've also managed to source some 60's AA members handbooks from bootsales, the 1964-5 edition displays well with the car.
30 MOT certificates from 1973 to 2003
And the original BMC passport to service, handbook and the 2002 tax disc which was in the car when bought, so it must have not been taxed after it's last MOT in 2003. Gotta love old paperwork like this...

It's been going well Rick, me and Dad have racked up around 700 trouble free miles in it so far. Going to try and get the lower half of the body tidied up and the collapsing front seats sorted out within the next few weeks. |
