Are there others around with long term memories of vehicles whose numbers still remain fresh in the mind for one reason or another. In my case happy memories of the owner or the style of the vehicle. As a youngster, just after the war,our neighbour had a taxi business and a number of Rolls Royces one, lower and sleeker than the rest, had a VV REG
which stuck, not the number, because the driversall called her VIV.Dad's Armstrong Siddeley was BSP 416,I loved that car, another of his was a Wolseley 12 BFG 946 while a friend of ours had a car of the same make but it was a 25,CON 246.
I suppose the chaps in the white coats will show up any moment to drag me off to the funny farm.

I remember the registration of my Dad's black Austin A40 from 1955-ish - EDN 945. I've no idea why it stuck in my mind.

UTR 610 - on a Warwick Green 100E Ford Prefect, complete with export fittings.

My father had just came back from Malaya fighting the Communist uprising there with the British Army and had bought this car from a Captain Chin.

It had the stangest wheel arch fittings which were made of some kind of wicker that apparently were to do with stopping long spiked thorns danaging the tyres. They eventually rotted off and to be honest I often wondered, and still do, if my Dad was pulling my leg, although the fittings were real enough. Rolling Eyes

Dad's 121 was registered ENB 622D, his 144S Volvo was SNE 57K. This was followed by OND 411W (Saab), then more modern motors.

Uncle's Cox GTM was HTU 880K (the first car I travelled at over the ton in), and his Saab 99/Sprint was WXF 149M.

I've only had 10 cars in 38 years of UK driving and can remember them all. The only ones of interest here would be:-

JYR 56 1948 JAGUAR 2 1/2 litre
ASH 564 1953 AUSTIN A70
THS 148M 1974 VW PASSAT TS
AGR 555S 1978 PRINCESS 2200HLS

Another reg that just sprung to mind was my father's 1964 Ford Corsair - BGB 102 B, known in the family as the 'Midden Motor' (bin lorry), not because it was filthy and smelly, but because there were two Corporation of Glasgow Cleansing Dept. bin lorries registered BGB 101 B and BGB 103 B.

Goodness only knows how his car reg got wedged in between!

Mid 1950's in Oz, the Australian States agreed on a three letter, three number combination. Victoria started off with GAA --- . My father bought a Morris Minor in 1956, it was GGV 399. His later Morris 1000 was GXT 554. Neighbours VW was GVH 037.

My own cars were much older- 1938 Flying Standard 8 had the earlier two letter three number combination of LV 384 and my 1939 Series E Morris was ME 290.

After we'd finished naming our pets & numbering our wives, we gave names to cars:

my sister's A35 - Deborah - DBR or DBA something-or-other

my poor VW - POR 547

a friend's family Wolseley - Katie Jane - KTJ 623 - David, are you out there?

What do you do with UTK? or SHT? (Dad hated this one on his Audi).

This could end up the largest thread ever!

TMP 368 (In 1948) My father's 1948 BSA combination
SNO 810 (In 1951) My father's 1943 ex WD commer utility (Hillman minx shape)
BLP 667 (In 1955) My father's 1936 Austin 7 Ruby
NHJ 383 (In 1956) My father's 1956 Ford Consul
9970 F (In 1961) My 1957 Standard Ten panel van

These were all before we left the UK in 1967! Aussie ones are harder to remember because one car can have any number of plates if you let the licence slip!

Further to Roverdriver's comments on Australian number plates being three numbers and three letters in each state. They used to be.

Western Australian plates went all pear shaped about 1983! Nowadays in Perth (the State capital) number plates are currently 1 followed by three letters and three numbers, but if you live in the country areas the plates start with the Shire or Town's abbreviated name and up to five numbers! e.g Shire of Donnybrook-Ballingup plates are DB 1 upwards to whatever! Town of Albany plates are A 1 upwards, but the Shire of Albany (Outer suburbs) are AL 1 upwards! Confused??? Well, I'll shut up!
