Hi. I just joined the club!! My motors not particularly old, but apparently quite rare! Its a Seat Terra, 1991 H reg, converted to a camper van by Danbury. Only problem is that someone in the past has bodged the gear linkage from gearstick to where it joins gearbox. The bodge has finally given way, & I can't get the gears. I think the part is called "gear link relay rod", or so I'm told. In my simple way, I just called it gear linkage from stick to box!! I have tried everywhere from scrapyards to Seat themselves, & no one can help in finding a replacement. I'm loathe to scrap it, & wondered if anyone had any ideas to help me?

On a different subject, does anyone else find, when going to a show, they keep thinking " I had one of those years ago"? My own examples are, VX490, 101, Morris 8 series E, Moggie Thou cars & vans, split screen & otherwise, Ford Pop, Prefect, & thames 5cwt van, amongst others I've forgotten.. I often think if I'd stored the motors I had years ago in a barn, I'd be a very rich man now!!

If push comes to shove, depending on the complexity of the linkage, I bet a small engineering firm (I'm thinking one-man-band type) could make one up to suit.

Thanks for suggestions. Hoping to get it up on ramps tomorrow- cranky legs stop me crawling underneath these days!!- & will try & get some pictures to post, which may make the problem clearer. SEAT mechanic says someone has sawn original end, which should connect with a knuckle joint, off. Appears they fitted a piece off another car, & secured it by drilling holes & using self tapping screws!! Unfortunately, no idea what car the odd bit came off!

Have you tried a Fiat dealer as this was a Spanish version of the Mk1 Panda?

Thanks RotaryBri, but local Fiat dealer can't help. But this does give me ideas for scrapyard hunt. i'm now told engine & box may be off a Marbella!

I managed to get some photos. Though a Seat mechanic told me the rod should have been forked to connect with a knuckle joint & the end had been sawn off, this looks as if its splined on, splines worn & someone put screws through to hold it. As you can see, part of the casting has broke.Can anyone recognise this part, & what it originally came off? Also, I've no idea what the round ball shape is for!!

Other end of rod, where it connects to gearstick- a rotten picture- where rod passes through lower casing, a large rubber grommet type thing!, with rubber inner had worked loose, The large black rubber thing! was loose on the rod in the casing. Just outside the casing was the brown rubber inner, also loose. When I pushed these back into what I considered the right position, through the hole in the lower casing, gearchange immediately improved BUT after a couple of changes the brown rubber? inner popped out again, & gearchange gone! (Reading this & looking at picture, I can't understand it, & I wrote it!!)
Seems to be the part connecting to box is working but slipping a bit, so needs replacing, & the part where it connects to the gearstick, rubber bushes etc, all need replacing. But where can I get them? at a guess they probably all came off a different motor, maybe including engine & box!

Cant help with the part but im guessing the ball acts as a counterbalance to make the change lighter or pull the gearlever over to 3rd/4th position.

thanks Victor101- wish it would make the gearchange lighter!! Been online all morning trying to find bushes, no success. Really glad I hung on to my old Vectra, or I'd be walking everywhere!!LOL

It now appears this is not original engine! - previous owner said he BELIEVED diesel engine was from a Marbella. Only number I can find is on front of block, seems to be TL-VW023 WWO. Underneath this number it says GERMANY & H. Its a 1.4 diesel. Can anyone help me find what it came out of please?

If it is a 1.4 VW diesel it will be a 3 cylinder engine. This was fitted to the Audi A2, VW Polo Mk4F, VW Lupo, VW Fox, Seat Arosa, Seat Ibiza, Seat Cordoba, Skoda Fabia and Skoda Roomster.

Most likely in your case is that it came from a Seat Arosa.

Thanks RotaryBri, just had a look- it does seem to be a 4 cylinder, counting the injector pipes & exhaust /inlet manifolds.Its a strange contraption altogether!! Cheers, Al
