I am looking for a car transporter. This is not intended for everyday use - I need to pick a classic now and then and would like to do that in a classic vehicle, not a 20 year old Mercedes or Transit or something.
Ideally I would like something like a 60s or 70s FK Austin or Morris but anything old & british would do.
An alternative, because I think it might be very hard to find anything, I might be converting a lorry or Van into a transporter. What lorry or van do have a chassis long enough to mount a second hand rear transporter platform?
Any ideas?

A large wartime Dodge sort of springs to mind.

Hang on a second, I'll ask around...........................................

A TK Bedford comes to mind, good spares availability etc etc.

Would love that Tempo. Jensen assembled these as well if I am correct.
But very rare and I think underpowered.

The Hanomag was a very popular transporter here in the 70s and 80s and most have died because of rust. Later models were badged as Mercedes. Have to admit that I start liking them more and more and might end up with one if I cannot find a nice FK. Some early examples had nice chrome bumpers and BMC 1600 cc petrol engines

That DS is gorgeous. Do you know one for sale under 4K Very Happy

Still I would much prefer one of these (is for sale but too expensive regrettably):

I would have thought that a DS would present enought problems without an enormous carbunkle protruding from its rear! Laughing
A garage I used to use a few years ago had a delightful Morris commercial as a recovery vehicle, but what about the ubiquitous Ford D series? They seem to be getting quite rare these days.

Heres an idea- I have a 1952 Austin loadstar which I'm thinking of selling. Everything works, it does 65mph and is roadworthy- I'd happily drive it to the Netherlands. The cab is like the Austin mobile workshops the BRM team used, but the present bodywork is a dropside. It has quite a short wheelbase so would only take one car. Fuel consumption with its present 4l petrol engine was 14.75 mpg unladen towing a small caravan on a 300 mile round trip. A diesel would get it to the low 20's, any good to you? Tim
