BSA had a rather confusing habit in the '20s and '30s of giving model numbers including the year: so, for example in 1933 the 250cc sv was B33-1 and the 250cc ohv was B33-2. The engine, silencer, and tool box don't look right for either, though.

It looks a lot like the 1930 B4 (i.e. Model number B30-4) shown on this page (about 1/5 down the page) http://motorbike-search-engine.co.uk/classic_bikes/bsa-classic-motorcycles.php though the timing cover doesn't look quite right - maybe just a trick of the light!

I've been doing some more looking around, Rick, and my money's now on either a 1932 B32-1 (250cc ohv): http://home.planet.nl/~leonhop3/1932_b1.jpg or 1932 L32-3 (350cc ohv): http://home.planet.nl/~leonhop3/1932_l3.jpg

Both look almost identical, and have that round plug on the timing cover, but if the pictures are accurate the position of the battery suggests your photo might be the 350cc. Of course, relying on catalogue pictures is notoriously fraught!

Steve.
