As suggested by bob2, I'll start a new thread on this 49cc powerhouse

My first taste of internal combustion under my control was probably riding as passenger on dad's Raleigh Runabout, built up from two examples in the 1970s. Ever since I've had an idea in the back of my mind that owning a Runabout, or something similar, would be a very sensible idea.

When this Mobylette, powered by the same Motobecane engine as on the Runabout, came up for sale locally, I dived in. Its originality and condition, complete with all of its badges and fairings, appealed to me.

It was delivered in the back of a friend's 54 Chevy truck



It has been re-painted a long time ago, then wiped over with an oily rag and left in a shed or garage. Consequently it was quite grubby. One bucket of water later and it came up looking better. The tyres are shot though, and the chrome on the rims will come up better, but isn't ever going to be brilliant.



On the plus side, it fires up readily and seems to pack a reasonable punch, for 49cc that is.

No paperwork came with it, but some research regarding old registration records confirmed that the records for Bury, where the moped was first registered, still survive. Even better, they have a record for the Mobylette, which should mean I can get a new-style logbook for it once I receive a certified copy of their information, thus keeping the old number on it.

My mum had a mobylette - bought new in 1964 - became mine when I reached 16 and used to go to school on it - many years later I was using it to commute to the station until it just died of old age. Went every where at full throttle!

Does anyone know whereabouts the frame number should be on the Mobylettes?

I went to the Kidderminster Town Hall to see Aker Bilk on a moped from Stourbridge . On the way home it was freezing cold, one hand was stuffed in a pocket with glove. The moon and stars were out and I thought I am going to have a long walk if this moped stops going ! This was in the 60's and there was no cars on the road at that time of night . Mid-week 11-12 pm.
