Our family has a 1939 Rover convertible that we know little about. Can someone here help us with valuing this car? I'll try to post some pictures.

|
|
Hello to Rover 16 Owner.
In response to points raised.
This is the 1939 16 hp Tickford bodied drophead coupe.(the 14 hp does not have the ventilator louvres on the bonnet side panels) The drophead bodies were the same for the 14,16 and 20hp models. These cars were made between August 1938 and Sept/Oct 1939, as defined 1939 models and 1940 models. The 14 with the 1901 cc 6 cyl engine was the more common model than the 2138 cc 16.
There were approximately 175 Rover dropheads built at the Salmons & Sons factory during this period covering the three engine sizes. The 20 was a 2.5 litre.
The 1940 models differ in having alluminium doors and a quarter light on the doors. Also the 39 cars have the S.U. carb as against Solex on the 40 models. The 39 cars have domed glass instruments with the clock in Roman numerals whereas the 1940 cars have the Arabic numbers.
I have owned a 1940 model 14 drophead since 1980. reg No PPD 480.
I have various lists of actual Rover dropheads that have survived and a copy of the Salmons build sheets showing all chassis numbers.
If you could advise me the registration number and chassis number of your car I would be able to advise perhaps some more information on your car.
Valuations can be a tricky issue. These Rovers despite being very rare (about 25 to 30 are known to have survived) are in my opinion undervalued.
A friend bought one about 4 years ago which was running MOTd and quite tidy for around £12k.
A really smart one may be valued around £15 to £20k.
This compares rather badly with MG SA or WA Tickford bodied dropheads (made between end of 1936 to 1940) which can be in the 30 to £40k range. These are fitted with 6 cyl 2.1 and 2.5 litre engines.
This red Rover dhc has been very well restored, but there are a few annomalies with the finish details which I could expand on if you so wish.
As I there is no reg number fitted I am not able to know whether I have seen or know of the car before, but would be most interested -for historical reasons-to have more information.
Hope above helps and look forward to an early reply.
Kind Regards
