hi folks
ive just been informed by the local mot station, my wifes 1965 hillman minx series v needs seatbelts as it was registered after jan 1965. it used to be before 1975 .when did they sneak this new one in .
the thing is the car has never had belts in it, so i cant see where to put them. or have i got to mess about with an original car to fit them .which goes against what the eu was saying in classic car weekly about not bieng able to modify classic cars in any way. ie tuning chopping and cutting etc.
has anybody got the same vehicle with belts fitted any info would be helpful.thanks craig
ps there was talk in ccw about stopping home servicing in the future too. Evil or Very Mad

A club member on another classic car site posted that he was turned away from a tyre fitters.

The reason he was turned away?
he was told, "we are no longer allowed to fit tyres on old style wheels"

As far as I know it was always 1965. You won't have too much trouble installing them as the car should have the anchor points already fitted.

+1 The law changed on 1/1/1965. Any car registered before doesn't need them, but your car has the anchorage points.

Seat belts, as far as I can remember, as an ex MOT tester, were first obliged to be fitted in 1966 (D Registered). And then only front ones. Before that new cars may not even have had belt attachment points and fitting seat belts to those would not do the job. Even dangerous to those relying on them.
Compulsory use came years after that.

Historical info should be available at this site. Which is the testing regulations from next month.

Checking it out it does indeed say 1/1/65, but I would put money on it originally being 1966!

Jim.
