Please can someone identify the make and model of this car (the grey and white one in the middle)? I'm now looking for a new project and it would be nice to start the long search for the same car I grew up in The year of the photo is 1969 if that's any help. I guess the car was about 10 years old at the time so that would make it a 1959 model. Anyway here it is. I know it's difficult and the poor picture doesn't help but I hope someone can identify it.

I think it's one of the later Standard Vanguards, but I could be wrong |

It's a phase 3 Standard Vanguard Vignale, or just possibly an Ensign but I didn't think they did Ensigns in two tone livery, so I'd go with the former. _________________ "The trouble with the French is that they have no word for 'Entrepreneur'".....George W Bush. |

Hi. I can remember that there were very few of them in grey and white and once when we saw another one in grey and white we franticly waved at them and they waved back (people did that sort of thing back then). I also remember it had a cranking handle (I think) on the front.
Yes, Vanguard, now that you've mentioned the name it rings a bell. I've gone through a phase in my life where I've become interested in doing up vehicles from my past and I've brought my 30 yr old Kawasaki GPZ900 back to life and an old puch moped similar to the one I had at 16. Now I'll have a crack at a vanguard if I can find one but it'll be my first attempt at a car.
Based on what you've told me and a search on the net and my fading memory (it was 40 years ago) I'd say it was a Vanguard Ensign. I had a look at http://www.the-vanguard-ph3-owners-club.co.uk/page3.html and the smooth sides of the Ensign look familiar. I do recall that 2 tone ones were very rare. I also recall that if my Dad didn't use the car for a couple of days, the starting handle would have to be used and even though he was a strong man it took a lot of heaving and would often strike his arm painfully. I also remember it had grey seats.

Hi Peakdistrict, I too had a Puch moped when I was 16, I broke my leg on it when I crashed into the back of a Volvo 340 with a towbar on... OUCH.
Mine was an M50 Sport (red) which I bought for £8.
Have you any pics of the bikes?
Cheers & best wishes with the Standard Vanguard |

As said, it is definitely a Vignale style Standard.
At that time there was a trend (fad?) for manufacturers to have their car body shapes "tweaked" by Italian designers. Hence Vignale, Farina and others I cannot bring to mind, were often incorporated into the updated model name. Can anyone recall the others?
The Vanguard and Ensign were very much alike, but I seem to remember that the Ensign had a smaller engine, or it may have been a smaller car. I suppose it could be classed as the "economy" version.

Quite right. But is the Mini on the right an Austin, Morris or Innocenti! _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

Didn't the Innocenti Mini have winding windows and opening quarterlights rather than the sliding arrangement?

Hi peakdistrict, definitely a Vignale Vanguard(with touches by Michelotti, mainly a new grill), 2088cc engine, drum brakes all round(square ones cause vibrations, lol) produced '58 to '61 so your picture date is correct. The Ensign was produced '57 to '61 with the 1670cc engine in the Vanguard shell, then from '62 to '63 as Ensign De Luxe with an overbored Vanguard engine of 2138cc. Good hunting, cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible
